The reason there is less gonk is because they've decided to go more in favor of body movement to show expressions. Back in the day, the exaggeration was for the purpose of cutting back on frames!
Also, gonk is out of style these days, and the new anime is said to be more adult oriented. I just don't think you should write the new series off that quickly!

the thing that really bothers me about usagi's new face is that it makes the show feel disingenuous. they keep telling us that usagi is ~awkward~ and ~an underachiever~ and whatever but all you SEE is her pretty anime face with her wide eyes and her tiny little mouth. so you get the show TELLING us that she has a personality like that but she never emotes that way for us to SEE it, and that creates this weird disconnect that makes it feel like the show is lying to you
keep in mind this isn't out of nostalgia because i've only seen like two episodes of the original series in my entire life and that was when i was, like. 6 years old. this is just me looking at these two shows side by side and going "yeah this is a huge downgrade." i don't want to watch 26 episodes of a show that looks like this
