Okay. I've got some things so say about Jamie. First things first, you shouldn't be representing your country in an international competition if you've denounced your own culture in favor of fetishizing someone else's. There's a line between appreciation and wonder, and turning something into a tool for your popularity and supposed "identity." Second, from a professional vocal standpoint, she really can't sing. I feel terrible saying it, but she's flat, and her tone is, well... It isn't. (1/?)
It's like she can't decide what she wants to sound like, either that or she's singing out of her actual range, which is actually only going to damage her vocal chords. She's not impressive at all, and I know, I'm bad for critiquing her, but Germany could've done LEAGUES better than her. She has potential, but she needs some kind of training. Thirdly, can we just jump back to item 1? What she's doing is so wrong, she's LITERALLY fetishizing and entire people and their "ways" (2/?)
And I use the term "ways" loosely, because she's picked and chosen the "cute" things that she, probably genuinely believes, are all that Japan amounts to, called it their entire culture, and proceeded to turn it into a costume. It's wrong. Gross, actually, that she could just throw away her own roots in favor of the whipped cream and cherries of Japan's pop culture, without even so much as trying to acknowledge and other part of it, any struggle, any racism, anything. In short, I'm astounded that people are actually okay with what she's doing. She's made a culture into her play toy by isolating what she wanted, throwing the rest out to trash. And some impressionable children are probably watching this, liking her. Looking up to her. And this is the message that they're receiving. (4/4, rant over.)
I take back the claim that Jamie can't sing, I watched more of her, and her higher ranged, softer stuff is really great, but she tries to sing of of her range and it really wrecks what good she does have
