3. Learning
Adrien had been enrolled at an actual school for nearly half a year now and he still found it an absolute joy. It was a privilege he never thought he’d ever experience. Spending the entire day with peers his own age, for five days a week, was a dream come true. He’d spent most of his life around adults. He never thought he’d actually get to socialise on a daily basis with people his own age.
Of course things hadn’t been complete smooth sailing. His first day had been an utter disaster. Pretty little Marinette Dupain-Cheng had not taken kindly to him when she had thought he was the culprit behind the chewing gum stuck on her chair. He had managed to convince her of his innocence and been civil to each other since, but Adrien was well aware of her lack of enthusiasm when it came to socialising with him. It was rather clear that Marinette kept a firm distance between them.
In the days that had since passed, Adrien had also made a number of socially awkward blunders. Each more embarrassing than the last. Nino had been nothing but supportive whenever the blond did do something socially stupid. The DJ had proven himself to be an excellent friend. Something Adrien was ever thankful for.
Perhaps it was this that had made his most recent error even more upsetting. He’d managed to ruin his best friend’s birthday surprise with one stupid sentence. Adrien could handle not knowing the right thing to say in a conversation, he could handle being confused and hesitant, he could handle doing the wrong thing in class. Ruining Nino’s birthday surprise, Adrien could not.
Poor Nino had been completely chilled about the entire thing. He had laughed off Adrien’s faux pas with a shrug. The rest of his class mates had not been so understanding. They had spent the past week organising a little lunchtime get together for the day of Nino’s party. Rose, Nathanael and Juleka had made banners. Marinette and Alya had made a cake. Max, Kim and Alix had made an interesting mix tape. Even Mylène and Ivan had signed up to help decorate, along with Adrien. Until the model had been an absolute dick and ruined it all.
Somewhere in the deep recesses of his brain, Adrien knew the whole thing had been a secret. Yet he’d somehow forgotten this and had let slip to Nino how excited he was about the party. Why was he such an idiot when it came to social interaction?
It was because of this inability to function as a normal teenager that Adrien now found himself sat at the back of the library hiding. The rest of his class (save for Chloe and Sabrina) were sharing cake and mixed tapes with Nino. He doubted any of them had done anything thoughtless or stupid to the friendly DJ.
“You’re being too hard on yourself,” Plagg sighed from his position in Adrien’s jacket pocket. “What’s done is done. I’m sure Nino would prefer you to be with everyone else in the music room.”
“I should have just gone home for lunch,” Adrien whispered, keeping his head stuck in the dusty, old history book he’d picked up to hide behind.
“You worked so hard to convince your father to let you have lunch at school,” Plagg continued, wiggling around to get comfy. “It’s a shame you’re wasting it by sitting on your own in a room full of boring old books.”
“I told Nino about his surprise party,” Adrien replied, sinking lower in his chair. “I don’t deserve to be there.”
“It was an accident,” Plagg sighed again. “You were just excited and didn’t think. Nino understands and he’s not one bit angry with you.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” Adrien muttered, dropping his head into his folded arms and dropping the book with a depressing thud. Plagg gave him a little pat but didn’t say anything more. They sat in silence, waiting for the lunch break to end.
That was the plan, until someone cleared their throat quietly beside him. Adrien slowly glanced up to find a blushing Marinette gazing down at him.
“I – I,” she started, looking down at her feet. “I’ve got cake. For you. I, erm, I have c-cake.”
“Cake?” Adrien asked with a frown, sitting up quickly.
“F-for you,” Marinette nodded, haphazardly bringing her hands out from behind her back and placing a plate with a generous slice of cake on the table. “Y-you didn’t c-come, so I s-saved you some.”
“You saved me some cake?” Adrien asked, feeling shocked. “Why?”
“Why?” Marinette repeated, standing awkwardly beside him, fiddling with her bag. “Y-you didn’t come so I-I saved you a slice. M-most people like birthday cakes and I-I thought you might like s-some.”
“I don’t think I deserve any,” Adrien admitted softly, glancing at the lovely looking treat sadly. “I messed everything up. Nino’s surprise was ruined because I couldn’t keep my mouth closed.”
Marinette hesitated, before pulling out a chair and sitting down carefully next to him. “Nino doesn’t c-care about that. He’s still enjoying himself. Although, I-I honestly think he’d prefer to h-have his best friend t-there too.”
“I doubt everyone else would be happy to have me there,” Adrien sighed, keeping his eyes on the table. He knew he was being emotional about it all, but guilt ate away at him and made him feel terrible.
“That’s not true!” Marinette replied, placing a hand over his. “T-they might make a joke or two about it, but no one is going to want you to not go!”
Adrien looked over at his cute classmate, with a feeling of hope blossoming in his chest. “You really think so?”
“Of course,” she smiled encouragingly. “Everyone likes you Adrien. Why would they not want you there?”
“I messed up,” he repeated, catching her pretty blue eyes and looking away again in shame.
“We all do silly things sometimes,” Marinette said gently, giving his hand another squeeze. “It was an accident and Nino isn’t bothered by it. He has laughed it off already. He will be bothered if you don’t show your face. You’re Nino’s best friend. He thinks very highly of you and I know he’s wondering why you’re not there.”
“You think I should go?” Adrien asked, thinking over what she had said carefully. He didn’t want to upset Nino further.
Marinette nodded beside him. “At least go and talk to Nino about it all. If you’re upset, talking will help.”
“It’s all still new to me,” Adrien admitted quietly. “I’m still getting the hang of school and friends.”
“You’re doing a great job,” Marinette replied with a soft smile. “Better than you seem to think you are. Besides, people can be daunting.”
“They can,” Adrien agreed, looking at the girl before him and noting her lack of stammering. Even her rosy red cheeks had calmed into an attractive pink. If anyone understood what he was feeling, it was probably her. She seemed to have a habit of saying and doing strange things. Yet no one ever commented on it. Marinette was still liked by the class and she faced each day with her own sort of confidence. If Marinette could be strong, then so could Adrien. He wasn’t doing himself any favours by sitting in the library.
Sitting up straighter, Adrien smiled. “You’re right. I should be there with Nino.”
Marinette beamed brightly and let go of his hand to stand up. Adrien followed her, lifting his bag and carefully taking the cake with him. He felt Plagg stir happily in his pocket and became increasingly more cheerful as he made his way towards the music room. They didn’t say anything else to each other, but fell into their first ever comfortable silence.
As they neared the door and the sounds of music and merriment filled out into the corridor, Adrien paused. Marinette stopped beside him and gave him an awkward little thumbs up.
“Thank you,” he chuckled, patting her arm fondly.
She shrugged and blushed all over again. “What are friends for?”
He stood frozen as Marinette opened the door and made her way bashfully into the room. Happiness flowed through him, causing his own cheeks to colour. Maybe there wasn’t such a big distance between himself and Marinette. She really did think of him as a friend.
Filled with added confidence, Adrien followed her into the room and was greeted with enthusiasm. Marinette had of course been right. He was liked, even if he was socially stupid.
Being at school, with people his own age, truly was a privilege he would never tire of.
