cassieverse reread (12/?): mom and dad
My memories before that are hazy: Mom is actually more a smell than anything else–the rose talcum powder she must have liked–and Dad is a sensation. I remember strong hands throwing me into the air and spinning me around when they caught me; I know his laugh, too, a deep, rich chuckle that warmed me down to my toes and made me feel protected.
cassieverse reread (11/?): Dante’s Casino
Deino, clutching a little red devil plush under her arm, had dropped a snow globe off with me before heading for the bar. It contained a plastic image of the casino that, instead of being surrounded by fake snow, had tiny flames that danced about whenever you shook it. I thought it would be just my luck to get arrested for shoplifting something that tacky.

She was their only daughter.
cassieverse reread (8/?): Billy Joe
“I call Billy Joe my guardian spirit, but that isn’t entirely accurate. He’s more of a pain in the ass who occasionally turns out to be useful, but right then I wasn’t feeling picky. Billy is what remains of an Irish American gambler who failed to lose the right hand of cards in 1858. A couple of irate cowboys, who correctly assumed they’d been cheated, shoved him into a sack and tossed it in the Mississippi.“

cassieverse reread (7/?): Apollo
“You cannot circumvent fate, Herophile!” Apollo snarled. “The Circle is weakening, fracturing from within. And when it falls, the spell falls with it! Don’t choose the losing side!” “I’m not.” I tossed the Codex into the air. Time seemed to slow down as it flipped once, twice–then a plume of fire thicker than my leg caught it before it even approached the top of its arc. When the flames cleared, there wasn’t enough left to make ashes. “And my name is Cassandra.”

“It was the difference between a single match and a bonfire. I inhaled a sobbing gasp, and tugged him downward. Fire gathered in that kiss, collected between our bodies and spilled over our skin, sending a shower of sparks through me.” – Claimed by Shadow
