Ah! Love.
That was the name of the cafe you were making your merry way into— not at all what you were feeling, at the moment. Normally, the feeling whenever you’d see the pretty pink sign above the glass doors would be a lighthearted form of delight, but not today.
Today you stormed through the entrance, nearly throwing the doors out of their hinges, all while spewing out profanities into your phone like a madman.
“One week! She sent the invitations one god forsaken week before the wedding and she expects us to go along with the ridiculous fucking theme she set up!” you fumed, stopping right at the middle of the small establishment, all eyes unknowingly pointed towards you. “No, I’m not just mad because I hate her. It’s really just unreasonable.”
This was a sight to see for all the employees of the store.
They were all used to seeing their cute and nice regular being all calm and composed. Which was why Kim Mingyu was suddenly scared to take your order with the violent whirlwind storming around you.
“I’ll take care of her, Gyu.”
Mingyu flinched out of fear stricken daze when his co-worker, Joshua, emerged from the breakroom, tying his apron back on as he approached the taller male. Joshua’s break wasn’t over yet actually, but seeing you and how much Mingyu was nearly pissing himself at the thought of approaching you in your flurry, he didn’t mind stepping out. For that reason and perhaps an underlying other.
“You sure?” Mingyu wearily asked. “You’re gonna get yourself into that?”
“I’m gonna fucking cut a bitch, I swear—”
Mingyu nudged his head to your direction to prove a point. Joshua simply smiled and nodded. He started making his way toward you. “Good luck,” was the only thing Mingyu left off with before dealing with a different customer at their cafe.
When Joshua walked up right in front of you, he didn’t expect you to stop spitting out venom each time you opened your mouth. In fact, you hadn’t even noticed him. Even after saying his usual greeting and asking how may he help you, you didn’t budge, still blinded by the rage of a million suns. He laughed a bit, finding it a little amusing, before deciding to put serving you into his own hands.
Quite literally.
In the middle of your small tantrum, he swiveled behind you and placed his hands on your shoulders, gently pushing you to walk all the way to the counter, where you finally found the consciousness to address your surroundings.
“Do you know how fucking obnoxious it is to hold your wedding on freaking Valentine’s day? Fuck, everyone should be celebrating their own love lives, not hers. She planned on fucking purpose, what a lunatic, I swear— oh, thank you, Joshua.”
He sat you down on one of the round stools lining the front of the counter, sending you a cute smile and a nod before running back behind to take your order. In the meantime, you were still engrossed in your conversation.
“Am I still going? Of course. She’s my cousin. But I’m not—”
“Blueberry cheesecake today?” Joshua interrupted. You looked up at him, phone still in your hands.
“Yes. Thank you,” you briefly smiled at him. “But I’m not letting that spoiled brat get away with whatever she wants. I have a plan. I’m gonna—”
“Do you want your usual coffee with that?”
“Yes. Thanks, Josh. Anyway— what’s more embarrassing that having the bride and groom be bested by their guests? I’m gonna make sure to put that little shit to her place. It’s been years, man, years since she stopped growing up from her brat phase and— what? Well. Yes, I don’t have a boyfriend to pull this thing through, but—”
“Large? Dine in?”
“Yep and yep. Thank you, Joshua. I’ll tip you generously. Yeah, I don’t have a boyfriend now, but that’s an easy fix, right? How hard could that be? I can just look around, flaunt my charm a little bit, and maybe I can find the one right in front—”
With a clatter, the blueberry cheesecake and coffee that you had ordered were placed before you, not fully registering that you had actually ordered something until now. Your voice trailed off, a little embarrassed at your tactlessness as your eyes slowly rose up and up and up to meet the ones staring right at you with such tenderness and patience.
“It’s two sugars, right?”
“...of me.”
There was silence.
You blinked at Joshua absentmindedly for reasons you could not quite pinpoint, but maybe the taste of dryness coating your throat and tongue was an indication of something. The softness in his gaze suddenly flipped a hundred and eighty degrees into a silent panic from your lack of response.
“Right?” he repeated nervously, trying to keep up his smile. “...wrong?”
“N-no, you’re perfect— I-I mean, you got it perfectly. Thanks,” you breathed out a large grin, quickly snatching the cup of coffee from the table to take a sip all while shutting off your phone and leaving it forgotten on your lap, not because you needed to cover up your sudden lack of control of your expression. Definitely not. You tucked a strand of hair behind your ear, finishing up the steaming hot drink in one go. Jesus, when did this place get so hot?
“I’m glad. I was scared that I got your taste wrong,” Joshua gleamed, looking down at the now empty cup of coffee. “Enjoy the rest of your food.”
He left with your empty cup, back facing toward you, and you let out a deep sigh. You quickly grabbed your phone once more, seeing a few missed calls, but you ignored all of that and went straight to your messages.
I think I may have found just the right guy, you texted your friend, furtively looking at Joshua every few intervals. But how do I ask him out?

“You know what this shirt is made of?”
You groan, leaning back heavily so your back hits the top rung of the chair with a resounding thump. “Soonyoung, focus,” you snap, pointing the rubber-topped end of your pencil at him, which makes his expression turn indignant. “And, as a matter of fact, I know exactly what your shirt’s made of, so that little pick-up line isn’t going to work on me.”
The boy pouts, crossing his arms and leaning over the table. You give him a narrow-eyed look and point towards his textbook again, which lies open on the same page as it had been twenty minutes ago, but he pays no attention to it. “So if I asked you a question you didn’t know the answer to, you’d go out with me?”
Your eyes turn heavenwards, but you know arguing with him is pointless. “Maybe if you were romantically interested in math…”
But he only grins, which turns his eyes into soft curves and his cheeks into fluff. “Challenge accepted.”
“I didn’t—”
“Are you from Tennessee?”
“That doesn’t qualify as a real question,” you say, affronted. Of course, you don’t really care, but if he’s really going to do this, might as well do it right. “And I know that one—you’re the only ten I see.”
“You know it, babe.” Soonyoung winks, and you give him a dirty look. “Did it hurt?”
“When I climbed up ten flights of stairs to come tutor you? No, but right now it hurts very much.”
He sighs a little, but uncrosses his arms and sits up straight, a competitive gleam coming into his eye. “Okay, kiddie round over,” he says, a little more seriously. “What’s the square root of pi?”
You smirk, unable to help it. “One point seven seven three.”
His mouth falls open, and then he shakes his head, looking resigned. “Of course you know that,” he mumbles. “What’s the atomic number of Iron?”
“Are you serious? Twenty-six.”
“Cobalt?”
“Twenty-seven.”
“Nickel?”
“Twenty-eight,” you answer smoothly. “You’re not even trying at this point.”
He scowls, and you have to bite your lip to hold back your smile, because the way he’s doing it is kind of cute. The expression makes him look like a hamster. The math book lays forgotten between you. “What’s the SI unit of magnetic moment?”
“Newton-meter per Tesla. See, if you’d studied for the test we have next week—”
“No, shush, shush, shush.” He shakes his head violently, and you see the competitive flair of the soccer team captain in the way his eyes turn to steel. And, okay, it’s kind of hot, but you’d never in a million years admit that. Out loud, anyway. “Magnetic field lines run from—?”
“North to South. Soonyoung, this is pointless.”
“The dielectric constant of a metal?”
“Infinity.”
“Damn, you’re good,” he mutters begrudgingly. You shrug. “Primary use of a Zener diode?”
“Voltage regulation.”
“Can I kiss you?”
You open your mouth, then close it. The pencil slips from your hand and clatters to the table, but you barely notice, staring at him with wide eyes. He stares right back, holding your gaze steadily, and you see hope in his eyes. Hope, and fear, and something eager yet innocent.
“Yes,” you croak.
Soonyoung grins, wider this time, before leaning forward and closing the distance between you.

“These are so good,” Jeonghan groans through a mouthful of pancakes, and you snort. “Don’t laugh at me.”
“Dude, it’s box mix,” you tell him, pointing to the aforementioned box on the counter in your kitchen. A bowl with leftover batter rests next to it, and you figure you should finish eating so you can clean up. Then again, you’re in no rush - it’s a weekend, and you don’t plan on doing anything unless you have to.
“I don’t care,” Jeonghan says when he’s finished chewing. “Still good. You want coffee?”
You nod eagerly, watching him get up from his seat across from you and head back to your kitchen. You busy yourself with scrolling through social media on your phone, occasionally popping a forkful of pancakes in your mouth, a slice of the strawberries you cut earlier. You hear the click of the coffee machine and your eyes dart to Jeonghan, who’s leaning against the counter and waiting for one of the two mugs he’s brought out to fill.
And it’s sort of strange, the way he’s become so comfortable in your home. Not bad - not overstepping any boundaries or anything, but… you wonder if the whole friends with benefits thing is supposed to go like this. It’s been a while since the two of you started it, more than a few months by now, so you guess it’s inevitable for this closeness to occur (especially when you were already close before) but it still strikes you sometimes.
After a few minutes Jeonghan comes back with two full mugs of coffee, then retreats into your kitchen again to find your sugar cubes and creamer (he made fun of you for the sugar cubes at first, but it makes you feel cool, a little vintage). You turn back to your phone and the quiet between you two is serene.
And it is so easy, you should have seen it coming.
“It’s two sugars, right?” Jeonghan asks.
You look up at him from your phone, and he’s got two cubes held with your dumb little tongs specifically bought for them, and it all just rushes over you. A slow wave, realization. You’re wearing the t-shirt he was in last night, he brushed his teeth with a toothbrush you grabbed at the store for when he comes over, his favorite movie is on DVD in your living room, he knows how many sugars you take in your coffee and this is…
“...or is it three? One? Am I totally off?”
Oh, your brain says. You blink, then put your phone down on your table. “No, yeah, two’s right. Yeah.”
Jeonghan gives you a strange look, one that tells you he knows something is up, but he doesn’t say anything, and you watch him drop the sugar cubes into your mug and add a splash of creamer. He stirs it around for you before placing the mug in front of you, then gets to work on his own.
You take a sip and it’s the best cup of coffee you’ve had in your life.
“Hey, Hannie.” The thought’s still there, the realization, the wave, the feeling.
“Yeah?”
“When did we start dating?”
Jeonghan pauses, but you know it’s not bad. He blinks, pouts a little like he does when he’s thinking (My god, you think to yourself), then shrugs. “Mmm, maybe… a month ago? A little more?”
The sun that drifts into your apartment through your balcony window is sweet, welcomed, matches the feeling in your chest. You smile behind your coffee mug as you bring it to your lips.
“Okay,” you say with a badly-hidden grin. Jeonghan has a matching one.
“Okay?” He asks, dipping a spoon in his mug to stir.
“Yeah,” you confirm, looking at the hearts in his eyes as he looks at you. “Okay.”
6:20 pm. “Mingyuuuuu,” you call, dragging the last vowel out. You hear a muffled response from somewhere through the walls, causing you to walk out into the living room.
Your eyes zero in on his silhouette sitting out on the balcony, facing the brilliant display of blue and orange hues bursting throughout the sky.
Stepping out, you softly shut the door behind you as he murmurs a greeting.
“What are you doing out here?”
Mingyu hums, eyes still focused on the spectacular view in front of him. He pats the spot next to him, and you sit, following his gaze to the sky. “Nothing. Just thinking.”
The view’s breathtaking, but not as much as you.
The peaceful silence lasts for a couple of minutes until he turns, suddenly reaching for your fingers and beginning to fiddle with them.
Slowly, almost reluctantly, you tear your gaze away to fix on him. “What is it?” you ask curiously.
“I was just thinking about you.”
“Huh? What about me?”
“Just how much I have to take care of you and how you wouldn’t survive without me.”
Instinctively your hand reaches up to whack the back of his head. Lucky Mingyu and his quick reflexes allow him to just barely dodge the attack.
You want to say a snarky remark back, but the suddenly serious expression on his face makes you halt.
“No, but honestly, it’s the opposite.”
Your arm slowly lowers to hang by your side. A soft breeze blows by as you wait patiently for him to continue.
“I was actually thinking about... how I couldn’t survive without you. How you’re the light of my life and always make my day better. How no matter what, you’re here. And also.... how much I love you,” he finishes.
There’s a brief pause to let the words find their way to your heart before you scoff, standing up and removing your hand (that you didn’t even realize was resting in his again) to cross your arms against your chest.
“Are you serious?” Mingyu stares back, bewildered. He opens his mouth, but nothing comes out.
“How can you say something like that and not expect me to fall even more for you? My heart to race like it currently is now?”
It takes a second for your words to sink in, but when once it does, Mingyu slumps over in relief.
“Ahhh seriously, I thought I said something wrong-“
He’s interrupted by a growl erupting from your stomach. You look at him, wide-eyed, until the both of you burst out in laughter.
I could listen to your laugh forever.
After a few minutes and a couple more giggles, Mingyu finally gets out, “Hungry?”
You snort. “Was that not an obvious enough sign?”
His hand gravitates towards yours again, the sun slowly fading in the forgotten background.
“Come on, let’s go in. I’ll cook whatever you want.”
“....did I ever mention how much I love you?”
“Dunno, maybe you could say it a couple more times. Or a couple hundred.”
I love you.

prompt: “i dreamt about you last night”
he was just a stranger passing by you on the street. both of you were heading in the opposite directions - yet as your eyes connected for a brief moment, you felt the feeling of longing settling inside of you.
his eyes felt familiar to you - as if you saw him from somewhere before. as you walked throughout the city as your paths had crossed this stranger, you couldn’t help but stop in your tracks as you passed each other.
“y/n? are you in there?” your friend walking beside you asked. you shake your head out of the trance you were in a gave them a tight smile “yeah sorry, you were saying?”
later that night as you lay in bed - you couldn’t help but think of the eyes of the stranger that you passed by earlier. although there was barely an encounter and it was in total just a couple of seconds of eye contact - you were unable to get them out of your mind.
“what did they look like again?” you try to recall as you think back to their face. as you recalled the brief encounter, you think back to what his eyes looked like as they were the only thing you remembered.
rubbing your hands over your face out of frustration, you let out a loud groan. you continued to toss and turn in your bed as the thought of this man just wouldn’t leave your mind.
“this is so irritating! why am i thinking of some stranger i made eye contact with for probably a total of what - five seconds?!” say to no one. flipping over to lay on your side, you read the numbers blinking on your alarm clock.
“shit… it’s already one …” you mumble underneath your breath.
flipping back onto your back, you drape your arm over your eyes as the moonlight shone through your window.
“maybe i can just sleep it off…” you say aloud as you let out a yawn. you felt your eyes get heavier by the second before finally drifting off to sleep.
your eyebrows furrow together in confusion as you looked around at the unknown area. trees surrounded you along with an assortment of plants and flowers. as you looked forward, your eyes are drifted towards the pathway underneath your feet which was covered in moss and grass.
“i swore i was just in my bed”
unable to make sense of the situation, you don’t even notice that your feet began to move on their own. as you continue being deep in thought, you unconsciously follow the path that was laid out in front of you.
it wasn’t until you noticed that there weren’t as many trees around that you finally looked up, now standing by an empty lake. you then realized that you were most likely in a garden somewhere - but where? and why?
“am i dreaming right now… is this a lucid dream or something… why does it feel like i’m actually in a garden though…” you wonder aloud as you continued to walk throughout the quiet garden. “might as well enjoy the scenery” right as the words left your mouth though, you felt a raindrop gently fall on your head.
soon enough, rain started pouring down from the skies as if the clouds had been holding it in for years. covering your head with your hands as you run through the garden, you tried to look for a place where you’d be able to take shelter. spotting a roofed pergola in the distance, you quickly make your way over.
“of course it starts raining when i actually want to take a walk around this place” an annoyed huff leaving your lips following your comment. squeezing your shirt to get the water out of it in order to relieve the heavy weight it brought on your clothes, you didn’t take notice of the footsteps approaching the small pergola you were under.
“it’s raining pretty bad - don’t you think?” an unknown voice comments with a laugh amidst the loud patter of the heavy rain. a jolt ran through your body as the sound of a deep voice surprised your ears. your eyes widen as you turn your head towards the owner of the voice.
you were shocked to see a boy around his early twenties, standing at a distance from you. round glasses that were now covered in rain droplets, sat on his nose as he stood wearing casual clothes and a thick jacket. a book bag was draped across his chest and you watched as he squinted up at the grey sky.
you felt your breath hitch as he turns to look at you, a small smile on his face. as his eyes locked with yours - you felt that familiar feeling that you had earlier today. he raises an eyebrow as you continue to stare at him in confusion “don’t tell me - you forgot again, didn’t you?”
as you continued to stare at him with that confused look on your face, he lets out sigh of defeat as his shoulders slumped down “i’m not surprised - it has been a while since our dreams intertwined like this.”
tilting your head to the side, he just laughs at your expression much to your dismay “guess i’ll reintroduce myself then - i’m wonwoo” he extends his hand out towards you which you hesitantly take. nodding your head slowly, you still were unable to grasp the situation at hand.
“nice to meet you wonwoo… i’m -”
“y/n. i know.”
a gasp leaves your lips as he finishes your sentence “wait! how did you know my name? do you know where we are? how did we get here? what do you mean intertwining dreams?”
wonwoo holds up his free hand as a signal for you to slow down which automatically causes you to halt your flood of questions. puling his hand away from yours, you couldn’t help but miss the warmth that contact gave you.
“let’s just say - this isn’t really our first time meeting.” wonwoo tells you, but that still didn’t help answer any of your questions.
“have we met before?” you ask quietly, to which he nods his head. placing his hands in the pockets of his jacket, he turns back towards the rain “many times actually. but it seems like you keep forgetting we do each time.”
as you try to make sense of his words, you didn’t even notice you were shivering. wonwoo takes notice of this from the corner of his eye though, and lets out a sigh. you don’t realize he’s taking off his jacket until you felt its weight against your shoulders.
the action snaps you out of the thought you were having as you looked up at him with wide eyes. he averts his gaze from yours though as he continued to wrap the jacket around your shoulders “listen, i know this is just a dream and whatever - but i can’t just watch you stand there shivering like a lost puppy”
you felt your cheeks heat up slightly and you quickly turn to look towards the ground. you perk up though once you take in his comment “wait! so this is a dream?”
he hums in confirmation in response to your question “mhm, everything here is a dream.”
“wait so if this is my dream - why are you here?”
“ouch, you trying to kick me out?”
“sorry! i didn’t mean it like that i just -”
wonwoo cuts you off with a laugh and you continued to stare up at him filled with wonder and curiosity.
“i’ll sum it up like i do each time we meet again. our dreams somehow intertwine with each others from time to time and we end up being in the other’s dreams. they always seem to take place in this garden also. but for some reason, you keep on forgetting these dreams we have together, meaning -”
“i keep forgetting that we’ve met?” you finish, to which wonwoo nods. a pout forms on your lips at this realization “what the hell! that sucks why do i keep forgetting you?!”
wonwoo shrugs at your question though “beats me. seems like you’re the type of person to forget their dreams immediately when they wake up.”
your eyebrows furrow together as another question leaves your lips “then why is it you always remember me?”
his features soften at your question and a small smile spreads across his face “that’s because i could never forget you, no matter how hard i’d try”
a blush spreads across your cheeks at the comment, and you feel yourself fill with embarrassment. you hear a light chuckle come from him as he watches your reaction “don’t just say stuff like that to someone you just met!”
“i wouldn’t typically say that to a stranger - but then again, this isn’t our first time meeting, remember?”
for what felt like the next couple hours, the two of you talked and got to know each other all over again. you felt at ease with him around, and you never once felt uncomfortable with his presence.
“why do you think our dreams keep connecting back here?” you suddenly asked him. he was unable to answer your question though.
“i’m not sure actually. it sure does look like a park around where i live though.” he tells you as you nod slowly. as you think over all the different possibilities, you suddenly raise up a finger as the sound of ‘aha!’ escapes your lips.
“i know! maybe it’s a sign that we’re meant to be!” as soon as you say that, wonwoo’s face turns bright red. he covers his face quickly with his hands as you continued to look at him excitedly “who’s the one saying corny stuff now”
you wave him off though as you continue on with what you were saying “maybe - just maybe if we go to this park when we’re awake then we’ll finally meet in person and not just in this dream garden!”
he gives you a soft smile at your suggestion, and you hear the rain slowly quiet down. “that sure does sound ideal - but don’t you remember? you always forget these dreams”
shaking your head at his response, you look up at him with a determined look on your face - not realizing that the garden around you two was now slowly fading away.
“i won’t forget you this time, i promise! and if i do - i’ll still find a way for us to meet!” were the last words you told him before things finally faded away.
rubbing your eyes as you wake up, you held your head in your hands as you hazily tried to recall your dream.
“wait… what was i dreaming about again?” you mumble groggily as you tried to remember. getting up for the day, you felt agitated at the fact that you were unable to recall the dream you had from the night before.
“i feel as if i’m forgetting something important…” you tell yourself as you got ready for your plans for the day. your friend had asked you to come check out a new cafe that was a whiles away from where you lived.
for the rest of the morning, you did your best to get an idea as to what you were forgetting. yet no matter how much you tried - nothing came to mind.
once you got down to the place you two planned to meet up at, your friend informed you that they were going to take a while.
“way to tell me once i got here” you huff. though the feeling of irritation soon left once you spot something in the distance. as your eyes wandered toward the park not too far off from where you were at, your feet began moving on their own, and that feeling of familiarity washed over you once again.
as you finally got to the park, you took in the scenery and looked at the plants growing. the feeling of deja vu hits you as you walked past a large, blue lake.
“i swear i haven’t been here before… so why does it feel as if…”
your train of thought is cut off once you felt a drop of rain land on you, more quickly falling down from the sky. running towards the closest place to take shelter, you stared up at the dark clouds up above. running footsteps make your way towards you, causing you to turn your head at the young man who stood besides you.
“it’s raining pretty bad - don’t you think?” he asks with a laugh, the rain nearly drowning out his voice as it continued to pour down harshly. once he turns his head to look at you, your eyes finally meet, and everything that you were trying so hard to remember suddenly came flooding back to you.
the smile on his face is quickly replaced with a shocked look as he realizes who you were. as the rain begins to calm down, the two of you continued to stare at each other with mirrored expressions.
a gasp leaves your lips and you raised your hand to point a finger towards him in surprise.
“i dreamt about you last night!”
wonwoo’s eyes widened at your loud revelation and a small laugh leaves your lips as you saw his expression. you coughed loudly as you extend your hand out towards him. a smile spreading across your lips once he takes it.
“guess i’ll reintroduce myself then - i’m y/n”
he shakes his head with a laugh at your introduction.

He’s a sensitive soul. Junhui makes a point to always poke and prod at Minghao’s soft heart, calling him gummy and doughy and full of love.
Malta’s pretty. It’s muted, but delightfully charming. It doesn’t have the obvious romantic appeal that Paris or Rome has, but it’s still beautiful. It’s obvious due to Minghao’s constant clicks of his phone, his starry eyed expression when he sees the strung up lights at the pier, and the bounce in his soles when he stumbles upon road after narrow road of clunky cobblestone paths.
“She goes to school here, right?”
Junhui is walking backwards, hands in the pockets of his sweatpants. He’s smirking at Minghao, knowing how testy he gets whenever you’re brought up. It’ll only take one push for Junhui to stumble, Minghao muses. Then, he can go back to the townhouse they’ve rented and sketch, or watch television, anything other than drinking.
Mingyu has been waiting, pregaming and trying his luck with the pretty girls seated at the table opposite him.
It’s then Minghao chokes on his saliva and realizes that you’re seated in the very middle, unbeknownst to Mingyu’s apparent ogling.
Junhui immediately swivels Mingyu to his attention, forces Minghao and a seat, and orders a round for them in the matter of a minute. Junhui has a mission tonight, and it’s to not warble around and carry a broken heart (or two) home.
The tiny table you’re pressed up against is cramped to the brim, and you’re surrounded by a hearty group of friends. Your jewelry sparkles against the little tea candles in the centerpiece, cheering with a shot glass to some random thing a boy is shouting. The liquid spills across your bracelet, but you still drink eagerly. You’re beautiful, more beautiful than what the social media and his memory could remind him.
You left your home country for this prestigious study abroad program in the beginning of college, evidently ending your love story with your highschool sweetheart. Minghao’s over it, he really is. If anything that’s lingering in his heart, it’s the memories of having so much fun, so much love between each other. You two are far different now, and neither of you would be able to go back to that fleeting youth.
Honestly, Malta is one stop out of many for his spring break. He thought his two days here would be over in a wink, and he could move onto the other niche destinations Mingyu and Junhui planned.
Minghao underestimated the fact that Malta’s tiny, and you’re at the heart of it.
Just as fast as you’re there though, you’re getting ready to leave. The night is still young, yet you stumble to your feet like you’ve been out all evening. Your friends tell you to get a cab, saying it isn’t safe to walk home alone.
“I’m not walking home alone, a friend is here,” Minghao hears you say, and he wonders if someone’s waiting outside for you. Someone tall, handsome, potentially his replacement. It makes Minghao sink into his beverage, swallowing away his unwarranted jealousy.
Yet you come to his table with confidence, holding out a hand to him.
“Take me home?” you pose this as a question, yet the flicker in your eyes betrays your need for his immediate acceptance.
Everyone’s looking at him, he thinks absently. He can hear your friends whispering and giggling to themselves, while Mingyu is audibly drooling next to him. Junhui is reaching for you, clawing across his lap to invite you for one more round before you head off.
“Come for breakfast, Junnie,” you placate, tugging Minghao by the sleeve of his hoodie before he can catch his breath, “we should leave now,” you say, waving politely at Mingyu. You have no clue who he is because Minghao befriended him later in college, but from Minghao’s peripheral vision your eyes are pointed in minor affliction. He knows that look too well, like you have the urge to close his jaw and put him in his place.
“Sure,” Minghao follows you out of the tiny bar, and he subconsciously inhales at the sight of the full moon and the hint of fresh air.
His steps slow once he makes it outside, the heat feeling like honey as he trudges half a step behind you. His eyes linger from your casual spring dress, to the kitten heels that buckle at your ankles. The cobblestone is uneven, but you walk through it like a seasoned exchange student. He doesn’t know where you’re going exactly, but wherever you end up he’ll follow.
“You didn’t come over to say hi to me,” you say shyly, your hands fisting in your marigold clutch.
He can’t help but smile at your sudden meekness, knowing that confrontation, especially one where there’s only two parties, makes you nervous. Especially so, considering you made such a grand gesture of attention and now that you’ve gotten it, you're overwhelmed.
"You looked too pretty, I was intimidated," Minghao replies honestly, and his heart perks up hopefully at the heated flush that spreads across your face.
The two of you talk into the night, throwing back and forth each other's new lives. Your muses have changed, your happiness is dependent on your dreams, all as it should be.
Minghao thought he would run out of things to say, as he is the one who stayed home all these years. Yet, you ask eagerly about his studies, the amazing places he’s seeing and the work he’s proud of. You ask about the concrete city you can’t help but miss. He then asks about the limestone that encapsulates your world. The new kind of love that you’ve been craving, a love for yourself and the investments you’ve made in your successes.
It’s different. It isn’t quick or to the point like your relationship once was. This one grows, a seed buried in the night sky. This one is a new relationship waiting to be tended.
The walk home went fast. Even though you two stopped for gelato and admired the passing ships, the journey felt too short to Minghao. You live in a boarding house with other foriegn exchange students, a nondescript townhouse that’s warm and soft and oh-so perfect for you.
"Thanks for taking me home," you murmur, in fear of your neighbors overhearing you, "even though I kinda didn't give you any choice in the matter."
"Always," Minghao shakes his head, unable to think of a scenario in which he'd ever say no to you, "I'll always meet you halfway."
He can’t bear to look into your eyes anymore. They still glow like before, a sparkle that reminds him of city lights and now, the lit-path down a cobblestone road.
Before he can second guess the signs he turns to leave, but your figure curls around him like a warm blanket on a Sunday morning. Your nails curl into the soft cotton of his heathered hoodie, clutching him like he'll evaporate on the spot. Your cheek nuzzles fondly into his back, and he instinctively relaxes into your touch.
"Stay the night," you request, already pulling him back into your room.

You were stressed out. All the studying got on your nerves and if that wasn’t enough already, your weekend was filled with chores and additional studying, leaving you no time for your much needed self care and time for your friends and hobbys. It just sucked.
Looking up from your textbook, you suddenly felt the urge to eat sweets. To relax your nerves.
So you made your way out of your room to look for it. Anything would do at this rate but there was nothing at all. Sighting heavily, the realization hit you that the only option was to buy something at the convenient store down the road.
A short glance at the open textbook on your table made you feel that you should take a short time off and get some fresh air. Not only the sweets but also the little walk could give you more energy to continue later.
That’s when you got ready and quickly threw on an oversized hoodie, grabbing your purse and phone to leave the apartment to almost hit a familiar boy with the front door as you were about to head out.
“W-wha… wow…. hi?”
He stepped back, sharing your surprise to see the other like this.
“Oh sorry!! Did I hit you, Shua?”
At your question Joshua shook his head no and you smiled in relieve. “No no, don’t worry, y/n. Were you heading out? Need company?”
You thought for a moment but then agreed to his offer. “I craved sweets so I took a break from studying to get some. Sorry that I can’t hang out with you for much longer after that but there’s still a lot to do.” He had followed you out of the apartment complex, walking side by side as he looked at you.
“Don’t worry, I just wanted to make sure you’re okay and taking care of yourself in between all the studying. I was worried.”
A pink blush appeared on your cheeks when you heard his words. He was worried?
Fighting back a smile, you made an ‘oh’ sound not to sounds too crazy. Sheepishly waiting for him to turn his gaze off of you, you took the chance to admire his side profile when he did. He was tall and handsome and you couldn’t believe how you got so lucky to have him as a friend. One that sincerely cared for you.
When you arrived at the convenient store, you greeted the old lady at the cashier. She was so lovely and always asked about your day whenever there weren’t many customers.
“Oh y/n! It’s so nice to see you and your friend! You got here just right. This is for you.” She pulled two packages of strawberry milk out of the pile of delivery boxes and handed them to you two. “I know you love it, enjoy!”
Trying to say no was impossible with her. She always insisted giving you small treats here and there. One time she told you, you reminded her of her own daughter.
“Is this your boyfriend?”
You already inserted the straw and were sipping at your milk when she asked about Joshua, causing you to choke slightly, blushing furiously. “N-no no! He’s a friend who wanted to cheer me up between all the studying!”
Not sure why you had to explain yourself because the way she was watching you two, you could see that she wasn’t fully believing you. “W-we just met outside and he wanted to accompany, right Shua?” He nodded quickly and rubbed the back of his neck a little embarrassed at the situation.
The old lady nodded with a grin. “Well, your favorite chocolate is cheaper this week so don’t forget to take some with you.”
You missed out on the wink she gave the boy next to you with a nod in the direction of the said sweets. He beamed her a ‘thanks’ and looked around, not to look too obvious.
In the meantime, you were roaming through the aisles, lazily picking up bags of chips and crackers before joining your friend in front of the chocolate section, the strawberry milk almost empty.
He sneakily got your favorite chocolate and hid it between two other flavors before you could see it. “You have everything, y/n?” At his words, you nodded, showing him the snacks in your hands.”
“Alright, I’ll get them for you. You are the stressed one here and I hope it will ease your tension at least a little. Just show me your beautiful smile, that’s enough for me.” The moment he noticed what he just said, he bit his lip, nervousness rising up while you were looking at him with big eyes, your cheeks burning.
The clapping of the old lady pulling the both of you out of your thoughts. “Ahh… and here I am, thinking those romantic moments only exist in dramas! But it happened right in front of me! You two are so cute together!”
You never thought your face could burn like it did now, hitting Joshua’s arm and gesturing him to pay so you could get away from this embarrassing situation and he got the hint immediately.
After waving your goodbye’s, you were back outside, Joshua carrying your snacks in a little bag for you. “She’s…. nice.”
“Yeah..” you replied in a weak voice. The cold air should cool down your face as soon as possible or else you couldn’t look at your friend. You walked back slowly, both deep in thoughts when you heard the boy beside you clear his throat.
“Uhm… actually I have something for you.”
You blinked and looked down to the bag in his hand. “You have the snacks you mean?”
He chuckled and shook his head, starting to open his white cross bag and pulling out a small velvety sachet. Your friend gave it to you and once you opened it, you saw what was inside. A light green bead bracelet. The beads were all in different shades of green. You loved it but you were speechless, feeling so thankful for the snacks he paid for and now his selfmade present. In the middle were letters which formed the word ‘fighting’.
Looking for words, Joshua became more shy after handing you his gift, his confidence gone completely when you remained quite.
“I… was just thinking about you. I wanted to give you some strength and support. Sorry, if it's out of the blue.. it’s nothing fancy or so but-”
“I love it!” You cut him off. “I really do, Shua! Thank you so much!”
You were already back in front of your apartment door as your fingers carefully rub over the beads. Without asking, he offered you to help you put it on and you watched him do so while pulling your hoodie sleeves up to reveal your wrist. He was careful not to secure it too tightly and it was difficult for him because he felt too nervous all of a sudden, the bracelet slippery between his fingers.
Pressing your lips to a thin line, you waited until he was done, suppressing your shy smile and trying hard to ignore your fast heartbeat. You admired the thoughtful present on your arm when you lift your gaze, meeting his eyes and you were sure, all air left your lungs.
Without a second thought, the handsome boy in front of you brushed a strand of hair behind you ear. “If you need another break, just tell me and I’ll be there. Any time.” He quickly turned around and walked away so you couldn’t see how pink his cheeks were, a wide smile on his lips.
As if he knew you were about to say something, he lifted his right hand and waved a good-bye before starting to run at turn at the next corner until he wasn't in sight anymore.
hiii here’s the valentine’s gram event writing. fun fact it’s my first time ever writing and au that isn’t a sm au so it might not be the best. anyway @wonwooslibrary i really hope you enjoy :)))
pairing: reader x jeon wonwoo.
genre: cafe au, strangers to lovers.
word count: 770
“Y/n, just grab me an Iced Americano real quick before you get here. Buy yourself something too, I’ll pay you back for both drinks” Your best friend, Seungkwan says on the other side of the phone. “Haven’t you had like three already? I really don’t think you need another.”
“Please Y/n, I need it to pass this audition. I’m fidgety and coffee is the only thing that calms me down.” He responds. You laugh knowing that’s not the truth, but decide to still get him his coffee, “You do know that’s not what coffee does, right? You’re lucky I’m right beside a cafe.”
“You’re a lifesaver. Is it the cat cafe close to campus? Say hi to Mingyu for me, I miss that guy.” He says before finally hanging up the call. You walk into the building, finding comfort in the warm cafe instead of the freezing weather. You notice the place wasn’t as busy as it usually was, you take in the smell of fresh coffee and the sounds of cats playing. A tiny, black cat with a white chest comes up to you and starts scratching at your legs. Before you notice it, a tall man is picking up the cat and apologizing,
“I am so sorry about that, he loves meeting new people.” The mysterious, tall man says to you. You take in his features seeing that he sort of resembles some of the cats in the room. You can’t help but feel butterflies in your stomach when he smiles at you. Not realizing your staring at him, he taps your shoulder lightly to get your attention. “Oh my, I am so sorry. You must think I’m a weirdo just staring at you like this. I’m just here to get a coffee for my friend so um… I’ll get going.” You quickly walk away from him and to the front coffee to order Seungkwan’s coffee.
“You aren’t the first one to stare at Wonwoo like that. Girls seem to always fall for him especially when he’s holding the kittens. I guess they think he’s cute or something. I don’t even see what the big deals about kittens are, dogs are much better.” The guy at the front counter says. If you thought the first guy was tall, this one is a skyscraper. You read his nametag and see it's the boy Seungkwan told you to say hi to, “Mingyu, right? Seungkwan says hi.”
“Oh, you know Seungkwan. He’s a handful, isn’t he?” Mingyu asks, which you nod your head to, and put his order in, “Yep, that’s why I’m here in the first place. He needs coffee for his audition, which I'm probably gonna be late to.”
“He still loves his Iced Americanos I see. Are you gonna get anything for yourself?” Mingyu says before turning to make the coffee. “Not today. Kwannie said he’ll pay, but he’s a broke college student who needs to save his money. I know that if I show up with two drinks he’ll try to pay me back”
“Okay, say you were gonna order a drink, what would you get?” The other man whose name you now know as Wonwoo asks you. You stumble over your words not exactly knowing what to say so you just respond with, “Um… just a normal coffee.”
“Alright, Ms. normal coffee. Coming right up.” He says before turning around presumably to make the coffee. “I don’t need anything.” You say trying to stop him. Mingyu speaks up first, “Just let him make the coffee. It’s not often he does something sweet for someone.”
“You don’t even know how I like it, Wonwoo.” You say a bit louder to get his attention. “It’s two sugars, right?” He responds somehow getting it correct. Shocked, you slightly nod your head as he finishes making your coffee and hands it to you. Before you get out your wallet to pay for the coffee, he says, “It’s on the house…” waiting for you to respond with your name. You tell him and he writes on the cup. “It’s not a large cup, so you'll be able to finish it before you get to his audition. Enjoy!”
“It’s weird seeing him so nice like that. Anyways, have a nice day” Mingyu says before handing you Seungkwan’s cup and softly waving you away. You walk towards the door, but before leaving them around to see Wonwoo smiling at you with the small cat in his arms. He points down to your cup where you see a short message and a number, “I guess I think you're cute or something.”
