Evette was born into the Ash Coven, but it wasn’t until she was in her teens and she discovered what her powers were that she knew she was going to lead it one day. Her father was the Hera before her, and after her and her brother were born he immediately wanted to know which one of them was going to be his successor. Since powers don’t manifest until witches are in their teens, he had to wait a while, but after he discovered it was Evette he didn’t wait a second to start grooming her for the role.

While Evette became close with her father, her mother became closer with her brother. Her father fostered her interest in the heights dark magic could take her to, while her mother brewed potions with her brother. When Evette went off to university she felt like her mother barely evened missed her, while her father gifted her a spell book.

During her time away from Rockland, Evette discovered what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. After a year of general study, Evette settled on majoring in criminology in hopes of becoming a police officer and eventually a homicide detective. Once she set her mind to it, there was no stopping her, and after she graduated she immediately moved back home and started work.

When her parents died everything went numb for a while. Evette found herself saddled with newfound responsibility, but the reality of that didn’t set in until months after. Her brother and her both ended up staying in the family home after their parents passed, and as a result they became closer than they were growing up.

In the numbness, there was one other person there for her. Though they had disagreements from time to time, Evette and the Fallen had a connection that always brought them back to each other. Growing up they mused about all the powers they might have when they got older, and when those powers finally arrived in high school they explored them together. However, he took it a step too far and ended up juvenile detention.

Evette has done her best to lead the Ash Coven just as her father would’ve wanted. Sometimes she fears that she isn’t doing a good job, but then she remembers that her father told her over and over again that no one could do the job but her and her nerves subside. Whenever she has nerves about her daytime job, she can always turn to her partner, the Dauntless. They know how to use the other’s strengths and compliment their shortcomings. When they can’t talk to anyone else, they talk to each other.

⌂ Story

Emma spent her childhood always on the move, with two wealthy parents perennially struck by wanderlust.  By the time Emma was 11, she had lived in Gujarat (where she born), Hong Kong, Istanbul, Cairo, Tripoli, Athens, Venice, Paris, and Amsterdam. Emma learned many languages during these years, and learned an array of different magical practices, but, more importantly, Emma decided certain truths about life. Watching her parents, Emma decided that she too should always get exactly what she wanted, when she wanted it. Learning to interact with new friends, often with major language barriers, Emma decided that quickly and accurately assessing one’s surroundings was paramount. Most importantly, moving from place to place, Emma decided that nothing in life was permanent. Nothing was eternal and, therefore, nothing could be sacred. Finally, when Emma was 12, the Goettlichs returned to the German states. Or, rather, Emma and her older brother, Friedrich, were sent home, while their parents continued their travels. Restricted to the family estate, Emma was supposed to work towards becoming a proper young witch. She would someday represent the Goettlichs to the world – and hopefully do a better job than her father had, her grandmother always added – so Emma had to act accordingly.

Though Emma learned to present herself properly, she flatly refused to learn to think properly. Emma continued to dream of far-off places and adventures, wondering when life could become exciting again. She felt totally caged in and restless, eager for any sort of change, any opportunity for rebellion. Her grandparents always called her wild, and Emma learned to accept the insult as a badge of honor. Schluchtenburg hasn’t been much different, and Emma didn’t expect for it to be. She has more opportunities to get into trouble, of course, and more outlets for her restlessness, but Emma cannot help but feel that she is wasting her time. While she is stuck at Schluchtenburg, the entire world calls Emma’s name. Emma just wants to call back.

⌂ Story

Mella was born to Abraham and Bianka Koenig on May 11, 1836, in Hamburg.  Two years later, Bianka died a month after giving birth to Mella’s younger twin siblings, Benedickt and Lisbeth. Motherless, Mella looked to her father for anything and everything in life. He loved her dearly, and always tried his hardest to nurture his children as Bianka would have. Abraham was an academic, only affiliated with his Jewish roots in the loosest terms. His agenda for his family in this modern age was assimilation into German society, though he could not bring himself to convert to Christianity, as so many of his peers had. Mella followed suit in all of this – she was a precocious and careful child, and grew into an intellectual and pragmatic young lady. She knew very little of her ancestry, besides the fact that her father’s father had been highly regarded in his village, known as a holy man who could perform small miracles.

She was very similar to her young siblings in these regards, but Mella’s childhood was also marked by small outbursts of the inexplicable. These outbursts isolated Mella from her siblings, and from her father’s peers’ children, who would have been her friends. Abraham seemed unphased by the outbursts and promised Mella two things: there was nothing wrong with her outbursts, and that he would explain everything when Mella was old enough. Schluchtenburg beat him to this latter promise. Durmstrang offered admission to Mella as well, but Abraham and Mella agreed that Schluchtenburg – the German option – was far preferable. Now, at Schluchtenburg, Mella hopes to make friends for the first time in her life. Of course, she also wants to learn all she can about her new world, but friends are something of a priority. A best friend, a rival, a beau … Mella feels that she has missed out on absolutely everything, and wants to right that wrong as soon as possible. Abraham always assured her that she was very charming. Now, it is time to put that charm to the test.

Seated in the library of Haus Silber, surrounded by books, warmed by tea, filled with hope, engulfed by knowledge, eyes can travel out of the window and meet Haus Gold, standing on the hill’s top, glistening golden in the rising sun. What a glorious metaphor! But seated within the small huts of Haus Bronze, eyes can neither see Haus Silber nor Haus Gold. There, you can only see trees, surrounding you like a cage of dead-ended paths, and nothing exists to warm your frozen soul.  It is only in class, when the voices of the teacher lulls Falka’s friends to sleep and when your hand momentarily halts to take notes so that her eyes can travel out of the high windows, that she can see the sun rising behind Haus Gold, see it set behind Haus Silber. And it is only in class that aspirations rise and fall, that bravery and will-power form a heart beating with eagerness; Eagerness to succeed, to gain back what is hers, her right and her destiny.

Decades and decades ago, when last names were not yet common, the family of Falka and Edkar Weber fell from grace. They lost their wealth and lost their status, finding themselves avoided by everyone who had once claimed to be their friends, finding themselves at the bottom of society’s food chain. They had nothing left, no honour to their name, no money to their ribs, not even a roof above their heads. But one thing remained, and even generations later down the line, it has still not ceased to exist; Their blood is pure and worth of magic. Falka knows the old stories of her family, and although her parents have only recently admitted that they were all of magical blood, she has no trouble adapting to her new purpose in life. Hadn’t she always felt like she was destined for more? She will prove that no pureblood should ever be forced to live without magic, and that a Weber uses the chances they’re being given. Ausdauer. Her mantra; Endurance. To raise from the bottom to the top of Haus Gold it requires a lot of this. Strength. Pure blood. Connections. But more than any of that: Endurance. Raise your head, look at the rising sun, take a breath. There are a lot of stairs to climb.

The right to be a comforter, when all other comfort fails; The right to cheer the drooping heart, when troubles most assail. The right to solace the distressed, to wipe the children’s tear; The right to shelter the oppressed, and gently chide each fear. The right to be a bright sunbeam, in high or lowly home; The right to smile with loving gleam, and make your husband want to come. The right to fan the fevered brow, to ease the troubled mind, and gently tell in accents low, 'All those who seek shall find’. Such are the noblest woman's rights, the rights which our lives were given, the right to comfort man on earth, and smooth his path to heaven. A poem which hung above Helga’s bed ever since she could remember, so that each night as she went to sleep, she’d be reminded of her existence’s reason. To remind her that since her fifth birthday she was engaged to a man of wealth and honour, who was already a grown man then. The infant was not asked to choose, she was not asked to accept, she was merely asked to behave and not refuse. To remind her that her path was not written in the stars, but carved into firm, cold, final stone, and soon her signature would conclude the contract.

Arriving at Schluchtenburg it was the first time that she’d been allowed to be a human above all. Not a woman, not a daughter, not a future bride, not neatly groomed, not perfectly dressed, not quietly positioned to be part of the furniture. A real human, who laughs and jokes and cries and fights and punches guys in the guts when they deserve it. Now her hair is tousled, her sleeves short and her legs stuffed in trousers. She has never felt better, and although she is inexperienced and clumsy, she wants to join the Gymnastics team and show them just how tough she is, that she’s capable to do anything a man is capable of too, and that the only reason why her simple-minded cousin and all her even more simple-minded brothers have a chance to inherit their grandfather’s treasure is because they were born male. They are not any better than her, not stronger or more intelligent, they are guys, that is all, and to her none of this seems fair. She wants to be worthy of this treasure, too, and so she makes the best of her time at Schluchtenburg, showing the others just how wild and brave and bright she is. That even while being a woman, she is worth to be the heir to her grandfather’s treasure. That none of her girl friends should need a boyfriend to be a whole, that every woman is her own whole, her own person. And that perhaps, though this is a secret, she will do well enough in class to be her own woman too one day, run her own business, so that perhaps she won’t ever need a husband at all.

It is within silence that the greatest thoughts arise. When your heartbeat becomes the drums which fire you on, which make you march down your life path with your head held high, when your breathing echoes like the crashing of waves upon the shores, and when even the rushing of the blood through your veins is louder than the Rhine during a storm, then you know that you have found your peace. Then you know that your mind will rise to its full potential and give you all the inspiration you need. Voices, music, noises, the clink-clanking of silver against glass during fancy dinner parties, all of this ebbs away and leaves nothing behind but your thoughts, your happiness of being your own person, pondering about life and death and everything in between, it is only then that the ink that runs from your quill to the parchment becomes the tool of the devil, so sharp and so precise that no one would ever except someone as shy as you are to be the writer of such dangerous words.

After Merle came to Germany with her family, her tongue was unable to speak her bright and busy mind, nor to help her mingle with her fellow students. Not even seven years of Hogwarts had prepared her for the hard times that were soon to follow. She started spending most of her time alone, something she had never done before, and learned how to find pleasure within the pages of poetry books. Writing became her outlet, and as her German improved bit by bit and people still carelessly discussed secrets around her, she decided to create and write Schluchtenburg’s first school news paper. Anonymously. Even after four years in Germany, she has troubles to adjust to her new life, but her pleasant and well-mannered attitude makes it easy for other people to trust and connect to her. To trust her with their secrets. Sometimes she feels bad about writing about her friends’ deepest desires and dirtiest memories, but then, every now and then, someone comes along and pronounces her last name the wrong way, and suddenly all her worries are forgotten. Seriously. Do they not know who she is?  Do they not realise that there is a reason why roosters fear her and snakes adore her?

Adelinde loved her mother. She loved the way she threw her hair, the way her laugh sounded when the summer wind rustled through the trees, and the way she would sometimes place a quiet kiss to her husband’s cheek and he would always smile. She loved how she was a gentle grace attributed with a bright mind, how her watchful eyes saw everything while her lips were always curved upwards but never parted to comment on what she observed. Adelinde wanted to be like her. She wanted to be as perfect as the woman who raised her, to be as elegant and dignified, to be the best example of what it meant to be the wealthiest and most famous pure-blood family of the continental Wizarding World.  But when her mother died, Adelinde was left with no one to look up to. Though she still had her brothers, worth a thousand worlds, she couldn’t fathom how a man would ever replace her mother’s role. Certainly, she knew all too many people who had it worse, that she was still blessed with money and the security of power, but why did no one ever seem to notice that everything tastes the same when you always eat it from a silver spoon? 

Her first day at Schluchtenburg was reported by the news, the entire world seemed to be watching as the young Graf smiled her way through pain, anxiety and insecurities. Oh, and Adelinde played her part so well. One would have barely noticed how every morning she woke up with dark circles under her eyes and hands shaking. All the money, all the power, what was it worth if you were still at a risk to mess up? All the money, all the power, it somehow had to be maintained. But how did you hold something safe if your hands were shaking so much? Adelinde is in many ways the perfect student. She is always at the top of her class, polite, and adored by her professors, but she had never been good at creating things on her own. No art seemed to flourish by her hands. Yet, sometimes, when she watches her house-mates doing what they love doing, whether that is painting or singing, reading or swimming, watches them being themselves, being free, she feels a little safer, and smiling doesn’t even hurt anymore.
