This past weekend, the 2021 U.S. Cyclocross National Championships returned to where they were first held nearly 60 years ago. BikeFlights Brand Ambassador Clara Honsinger successfully defended her elite women’s stars and stripes jersey on a scenic race course that was nestled between military tanks on display for the First Division Museum and the Cantigny Park Golf Course. Eric Brunner won the elite men’s race.

During the lead-up to the race, many people speculated about what the weather conditions would be and how they would impact the course. Although there was no snow or frigid temperatures in the forecast, rain and high winds would turn out to create a challenge for everyone. The course turned slippery due to the precipitation, and the wind constantly blew throughout the races. What resulted was heavy and unpredictable mud.

In the elite races, Honsinger and Brunner each soloed to victory while their competitors contested each other for the remaining podium spots. Pan-American Champion Raylyn Nuss, finished in second place while Sunny Gilbert rounded out the top three in the elite women’s race. Curtis White and Gage Hecht battled to the finish line to complete the elite men’s podium.
Most of the elite and under 23 athletes will return to Europe for the remainder of the season before coming back to the U.S. for UCI Cyclocross World Championships, in Fayetteville, Arkansas on January 29-30, 2022.

It’s been a long season starting with Cohutta in April (and it may not be over yet) and yesterday’s race felt like coming home to race with my family. I’ve learned a lot this year about how far I can push my limits mentally and physically. Mentally, the most challenging part of the year was probably missing the turn at cohutta, but physically I never dreamed that I’d be able to push myself the way I have the last two weeks after my 24 hour race. I’m grateful for all the people who have helped me along the way from sponsorship help to coaching to some amazing training partners.
