Rochelle Goyle and Cy Clops help Robecca Steam and Venus McFlytrap get on a date
Does anyone else think the reason why there was so much m/f romance in G1 was to keep fans from speculating certain characters were queer ( whether or not they actually were ) ? Maybe I'm just crazy idk
Johnny x Operetta was so poorly introduced and just thrown together. Mind you, Operetta has had a lot of affectionate interactions w ghouls and even to this day sapphic Operetta is a popular headcanon. They just kept throwing in random male crushes or romantic plots for Operetta, having some of the most in the series at 4.
Spectra is also a character particularly affectionate towards ghouls, but unlike Operetta didn't show as much interest in mansters up until Porter. I'll come back to this.
Jinafire n Skelita and Twyla n Howleen are often thought to be couples despite not being canon. And wouldn't you know it one of either pair was randomly thrown together into a romance w a manster ( Jin w Heath ( I'll come back to this ) and Howleen having a male celeb crush ) after their affectionate and close moments w the other ghoul.
Venus clearly has some bias towards Robecca, and in contrast there's some random guy named Cy, pretty bland, and is really just there to be in love w Robecca.
Abbey didn't care much for the men and even went as far as to say " they are all very pretty... NO. Too obvious " about ghouls. And then Heath came along.
Now, Heabby wouldn't be much of a problem bc at first they were consistent with their relationship, and it seemed genuine ! And obvi Abbey having some sort of feelings towards ghouls doesn't make her just a lesbian. But then they dropped Heabby ( mostly ) and put Heath w Jin after Jin and Skelita were shown to be very close.
It's the fact that a lot of these relationships and crushes only came up after ghouls either shared a close and or intimate bond, or showed potential interest in other ghouls that's suspicious. And the funny thing is, a good chunk of the fandom ignores some of these anyway because of how poorly written, executed, or random they are ( with another chunk of the fandom doing the work the writers should have to make these relationships better ), so it didn't even work lol.
The best of these is, funnily enough, Spectra x Porter. They showed chemistry, that they're good friends outside of romance, and there was at least some effort. Them falling in love so quickly is kinda bullshit but also it's made for kids so fhghjgjgjd. Heabby could've been great but got ditched in favor of occupying Jin, unfortunately making both pairings feel disingenuous. Cybecca is so obviously only """real""" because the Ghoulfriends books needed a romance plot and, if my speculations are correct, to occupy Robecca from Venus. Howleen's celeb crush does work with her character but has unfortunately suspicious timing ( and also it's not a relationship ). Joperetta was haplessly mashed together, and it's so obvious they don't give a shit about Joperetta either.
And here's the EXTRA funny part
This is behind Porter and Spectra in a scene where they're talking about seeing each other again, and in a room only Porter knows about, which means he's the one who painted that. Supposed m/f couple (/silly) ( I can make another post abt this if anyone gaf )
Here's the thing, these are just speculations and can easily be unfortunately suspicious timing. But consider Mattel has a history of watering down or denying queer characters and couples, I wouldn't be surprised if all of this wasn't a coincidence.
AGAIN I REPEAT THIS IS NOT CONCRETE AND IS PURELY SPECULATION. THIS COULD VERY WELL MEAN NOTHING. And also you are very free to ship any of the m/f couples mentioned, have your own Headcanons, etc... so long as you're not erasing important rep. I am also NOT SAYING ANY OF THE GHOULS ( and Porter ) MENTIONED ARE EXPLICITLY LESBIAN OR EVEN SAPPHIC. Some of them are sapphic, but not all of them.

I've noticed in the ghoulfriends books that Venus really likes Robecca's attention and is noticeably softer to her. She doesn't treat Robecca like a goddess or anything but she's definitely nicer !
She calls Robecca 'Becs', invented a leash system because Robecca often gets lost and distracted, tries getting her attention a lot, gets annoyed when she can't because of someone else, and is quite protective of her.
" what about Robecca ? " She's like. Mega oblivious I fear. There's this... Thing called Cy Clops and he's in love with Robecca, like very obviously, and she hardly notices
So, I'm a big fan of the "Ghoulfriends forever" book series (even though they're meant for ten year old kids LOL) and I can't wait to read the last one!! So here you have Cy Clops, one of my fave characters <3 Am I the only one that ships him with Robecca? I mean, they are super cute, I really want them to end up together *^*
