Cyber Day by Catherine Ryan, St. Declan's Community College
On the 3rd of October Comhairle members like myself woke up very very nervous. We thought about every training session we had done over the past few months, the endless practise, which even included talking to ourselves in front of a mirror!
As a group we decided on 3 main principles we felt we needed to tackle, we asked the students to promise us;
To never cyber bully.
To report any cyber bullying they see and
To be aware of how they present themselves online.
The Journey to Dungarvan on Cyber Day had my heart racing, my stomach was in complete knots. I wanted to show everyone what I was capable of, to do my fellow comhairle members, who have worked tirelessly for this, and my family proud. My other Comhairle members faces began to fly into my mind. I am honoured to work with such an amazing group of people. Before Comhairle I would not have been able to speak in front of my class never mind speaking in front of a whole school and teachers!
That's one of the many amazing things about Comhairle, I feel both I and all of the members have changed and grown so much over the year. I remember watching one of the teams practising one night and feeling a burst of pride in my heart, you could see the nerves in there eyes but regardless they powered through. They have grown into confident young adults who did every one of us proud. They blew every one of us away! That was one of my favourite moments from the year, to see such a huge growth and change in a person is truly beautiful and to have had the privilege of being on the journey with them even makes these small little moments even more special.
We arrived at the school with plenty time to spare. The Principal, vice principal, teachers and students could not have been more welcoming. The nerves truly started to build as Cal and I watched the students pour in, I couldn't of asked for a better partner he was a pleasure to present with. And so, this is where it began, everything we worked for came to a head. To be honest I can't remember much after that! The day passed in a complete haze. It was truly amazing, I will never forget that feeling or the amazing response we got . To think that we touched or helped even one person makes all the preparation, nerves and the endless training worthwhile.
After school had officially finished, all the comhairle members who had been presenting within walking distance of Dungarvan meet up. Emotions ran high with hugs and soppy tear jerking stories all round! It was beautiful to see people from every single background possible coming together and having a deep understanding of each other. Moments throughout the year constantly remind me of the true friendships I have made. We are most definitely one huge crazy giant family, we stick together and support each other no matter what and thats what i feel comhairle is all about. Finding one place where you truly belong, tackling issues that affect us, and making the best friends a person could possibly have!
