It worked for 5 books, and Cyborg Doakes is always hilarious…
Oh my god, I'd forgotten that Doakes actually becomes part machine in the books! I was just picturing him as a Robocop and/or Six Million Dollar Man.
Well, he's technically an amputee with multiple prostheses and a communication computer built into his arm, although remembering that a "cyborg" is a living creature who has some form of technological attachments that are are vital to their day-to-day life, Doakes does technically fit that criteria.
But then, so did Dick Cheney (mechanical heart), that guy who won the Medal of Honor who lost his hand saving his fellow soldiers and got a robotic replacement, and in fact anyone who needs eyeglasses to see.
But yeah, Cyborg Doakes is pretty great.
