Cycas panzhihuaensis

The Chinese cycads are not as well-known or as widely grown as Cycas revoluta, the Sago Palm (which comes from Japan). Cycas panzhihuaensis is native to Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces, and it was not officially named until 1979. Our plant is a female, as shown by the rounded cone (male ones are more elongated).

I found this Cycas revoluta dumped in a ditch after the 2021 winter storm. Brought it home, but didn't get around to dividing and potting up the largest stems until the fall. Almost a year and a half later, it's starting to leaf out.

Cycas revoluta

Cycas revoluta, from southern Japan, is the most common of the cycads, and it manages to look both like a fern and like a small palm (its common name is the sago palm), but it is neither. Cycads are their own distinctive kind of plant, with their cones showing them to be relatives of the conifers. They have separate male and female plants, and the elongated cone seen here is an indication that our plant is a male.

Cycas debaoensis

Cycas is a very large genus, with the various species scattered across southern and eastern Asia, islands in the Pacific, Australia, Madagascar and East Africa. In our area, Cycas revoluta (the Sago Palm, from southern Japan) is much the most commonly grown species, but others are making their way into horticulture, including Cycas debaoensis, from Guangxi Province in southern China. Cycads are cone-bearing plants, and our specimen is producing a cone for the first time. Any given plant is either a male or a female, and the cone in the photo shows that ours in a male (a female cone is much wider).
