Bath Cycle and Cafe Culture
I was previously in Bath for The City Tour Street Race Series in Spring. Everything about the City that day seemed to be about the bike. I returned to see how it was on a normal day.
There is no shortage of good recreational cycling outside the City of Bath. Route Four of the National Cycle Network from Bristol to London crosses the City. Nearby in the surrounding countryside there are many scenic cycle routes; NCN4 encompasses the Kennet and Avon path and The Bristol to Bath Cycle path. The spectacular Two Tunnels 13 mile circular route uses part of NCN4 and the Kennet & Avon path.
In the City Centre, I found little in the way of actual cycle infrastructure other than an adequate supply of Sheffield parking stands. A taxi driver confirmed my thoughts that high parking charges and extensive traffic free zones effectively mandate a cycling and walking culture in a similar way to York, Oxford and Cambridge. As such the inner roads are largely traffic free and feel safe to cycle on. There is a hire bike scheme similar to London. Nextbike has 100 bikes in Bath spread over 14 docking stations released by an App derived code, though I didn’t see any in use during my short visit.
I didn’t find any cycling cafés either, that is cafés with either a cycle retail or servicing facility, but the two Society Cafés, owned by keen cyclists, are cyclist friendly and make such a statement with a wall mounted bike in each of the cafés. During the week they tend to be frequented by non cyclists, but at the weekend the Kingsmead Square shop in particular attracts cyclists at various stages of a ride.
Bath is a lovely place to visit for a number of reasons; history, culture, bespoke shops but for me it is the traffic free aspect of the city that is most enjoyable.
