For just the second time in the event’s history, the UCI Cyclocross World Championships happened on U.S. soil. Racers and spectators from around the world enjoyed a weekend packed with intense ‘cross racing to determine which riders would wear the rainbow stripes for the next year. BikeFlights was on site to watch all the action and catch up with everyone at our very first expo of 2022.
A World-Class Course
The purpose-built cyclocross course had significantly different conditions than the only other time that the same racers competed on it at the World Cup test event back in October. What was heavy mud last time turned into dry, hard-packed terrain that enabled high speeds and closely contested races.
The starting pavement straightaway led each race into a winding descent through the woods before a long climb out. After the first pit area, the course featured wide and straight sections as well as steep off-camber turns. The course’s most prominent feature was a 38-step staircase that forced the riders to dismount and run their bikes to the top before remounting and continuing to pedal to the finish line.
Results
The weekend started with the non-championship team relay event on Friday. During the following two days of racing, six racers earned their right to wear the rainbow bands on their jersey as freshly crowned world champions.
