Jix did not know where he was. All he knew was that one minute he was playing happily in a park, and the next minute he was grabbed and thrown into a sack. When he was finally let out of the sack, it was only to go into a metal cage. His yells went unnoticed. His wishes unfulfilled. He was crying and huddled in a corner of the cage by the time someone actually paid any attention to him. Bright lights were turned on and someone in a long white coat came to Jix’s cage.
“Hey! Bad human! Let Jix out! Is mean to keep Jix in here!” he said with gusto, but when the human actually started to open the cage, he got very scared. “Nooooo! Don’t hurt Jix!” he yelled, keeping to the back of the cage, but the human grabbed him anyway. “Let go of Jix! Am not plaything!” he screamed, kicking his roots. Finally, getting so scared that he no longer cared to be polite, Jix scratched at the hand that held him with his thin, sharp fingers. The human cried out in pain and dropped Jix onto the floor.
“WAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!” Jix yelled in sheer panic as he ran across the room and out the open door. Running down the hallway and flailing his arms, Jix had no idea where he was going. All he knew was that he wanted to get away from the human in the white coat and whatever he had planned to do with him. He ran down the hallway, around this corner and that, not having any sort of plan. Seeing an open door, he ran inside and hid behind a pile of books. Huddling there, he heard many humans yelling and looking for him just outside the door. He started to cry again.
“Am scared. Going to die. Too young to die. Have not tried all the world’s littles yet…” he muttered to himself. He thought it would be a good idea to hide even deeper inside the room, in case a human decided to look inside the door. So he skittered across the floor, looking for a safe place. He ran right into the back of what he thought was another human’s foot. “Oh no…” Jix whimpered, looking up. He craned his little head back to see all the way up, and he noticed pointy elf ears.
“Elf! Elf will understand!” Jix said excitedly. “Elf, hi-hi! Jix needs help! Humans going to kill Jix! Please help!” he yelled, jumping up and down and trying to get her attention, even venturing to tug on her pant leg with his hand…
