Cygarettes and cygars are metal cylinders designed to hold radioactive, psychoactive crystals, allowing them to be heated and the smoke inhaled through the auxiliary vents in the mouth. Does that sound anything like what you're familiar with? Good!
Once upon a time, these crystals were imported from other planets -- primarily Cygnus VII. Over long periods, the smoke proved to be corrosive, and behaved predictably when cycled through Cybertronian ventilation systems. They've since been modified to be safer.
Not that it ever stopped the connoisseurs from seeking out the "real thing."
