Here is my take on the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette. Already loved by so many, I’m going to show you why this is a must-have item…

Let’s rewind to October 2015, when the Self Made palette was released. I bought this palette and fell in love. It contained 14 shades, 2 of which were matte and the rest were some kind of metallic. While these shades are all beautiful and I do not regret buying this palette, my main issue with it was simple. Palettes aren’t usually travel-friendly so if you wanted to travel with only this product for eyeshadows, you’d struggle. The Self Made palette didn’t contain enough mattes or transition shades to create a complete eye look. This is where the Modern Renaissance palette kicks butt.

Packaging

The packaging is similar to the other ABH eyeshadow palettes, it’s made from cardboard with a mirror inside. They’ve added their logo to the frame around the mirror.

The outside of the palettes are usually quite unique and this one is no different. Covered in a baby pink felt, the outer packaging compliments the warm tones inside.

While it looks cool and feels fuzzy to the touch, it’s not exactly practical and if you’re messy with your makeup then this palette is going to get dirty and clearly isn’t wipe-clean.

It comes with a double-ended brush which is probably won’t use as it’s quite scratchy and not the best quality.

Anastasia’s daughter, Claudia (@Norvina1), plays a huge part in the company and she worked on this palette. She asked her loyal fans and customers on Twitter whether they prefer mostly matte shades or metallics in a palette. The majority said matte and Modern Renaissance was born.

As you can guess from the name, Claudia took inspiration from oil paintings in the Renaissance era. She named Buon Fresco after a painting technique, Primavera is a painting by Italian artist Botticelli and Tempera which is a painting medium.

With this fantastic mix of shades, you can create a complete eye look as they have plenty of transition shades for the crease of the eye, a few shimmers for the lid and darker shades for defining the outer V of the crease.

Swatches

All of the eyeshadows are consistent and are extremely pigmented. You won’t need much product on your brush. They are creamy which is perfect for blending.

Comparison to Self Made

Unlike the Limited Edition Self Made palette, this beauty is a permanent item!

The eyeshadow pans appear bigger than the Self Made eyeshadows. However, on closer inspection, you get 0.025 oz in the SM and 0.02 oz in the MR palette. You are actually getting slightly less product so the pans must be wider but shallow. I would imagine the pans were made bigger for the matte eyeshadows which usually require larger, fluffy brushes for application.

Overall I love this palette and I haven’t seen a similar one on the market. Don’t be put off by the bright berry colours, these are fantastic shades when used together with the brown transition shades.

Claudia has been working on the formula since the older eyeshadow palettes were released and they’ve really done well with the quality. Totally worth the money.
