I typically look at the idea of Zero being relatively emotionally naive / cold vs X’s warmth and pathos. Zero looks up to X for that reason (at least after x4 probably) and X looks up to zero for the strength he exudes. Both are probably inwardly hurting more than they let on though so it ends up becoming interesting to write about. THOUGH THIS IS PROBABLY ALREADY DONE TO DEATH. Makes good songs though

I LOVE seeing fics that explore that! The mutual respect Zero and X have for each other is such a wonderful thing, I love it so much. I wouldn't mind reading fics about that aspect of their relationship over and over again (sadly, not that many fics delve into it). Zero and X both have their faults and insecurities, but they rely on one another for support (at one point in Xtreme 2, Zero says “We’ve fought until now by believing in each other”). It’s really sweet (and it does make for good songs!) Canon explicitly confirms that too, which is always nice:

“Zero and X have faced and fought through many difficulties together. As long as X is with him, Zero can do anything. Though he doesn’t express it, Zero believes this with all his heart. This is something that will never change.” (Megaman Xtreme 2)

“Various memories flash through X’s mind. The most dominant ones are the memories of Zero. Zero should have finished his mission by now. X thinks that he can stand up to any difficulties with his partner and friend Zero. While he thinks like that, he can’t help but think of new challenges to face with his friend” (also from Xtreme 2. This English version is a tiny bit different from the Japanese, but I still love it).

Though you are more correct regarding the lack of fics with that theme now that I’m thinking about it. I think I got so lost in my own headcanon informed by the fics I’ve found espousing that ideal that I actually thought it was more prevalent than it was. But yea - I’ll be working on those fansongs since I plan to do something cool with a few tunes to tell that story over the course of a couple songs.

Ohh I didn't know you wrote songs about the Megaman series! You should share those sometime! (I have listened to a few of your other songs, they’re really neat!) Iris/Zero isn't really my thing, but I might check his stuff out since that sounds like an interesting portrayal of Zero's active fight against the virus. 

Haha, I totally get you on that- I sometimes have to double check things to make sure it's actually canon as opposed to a headcanon that's so ingrained in my mind it might as well be canon. But anyways, it'll be interesting to hear your take on that via song! Fansongs are always really cool :D

I just saw this post again and I’ve been looking at covering Clover and like… CielZero is kinda CANON??? *voms*

I had no idea what "Clover" was so I just googled it & the lyric translation and I don't see anything pointing towards Zero / Ciel? (in fact, the lines "the name of that flower ended up blurred at the bottom of memory / my heart is parched as if I'm losing a fragment of myself" makes me think of Zero losing his memories of X, which in turn screwed him over because he lost a huge chunk of his personality because of that). Either way, I still stand by my stance of "14 year old kids shouldn’t be shipped with centuries old robots".

Actually, while we’re on the subject of Megaman songs, someone reminded me of “Mizu no Naka”, the gay as hell end credit song they wound up not using for X5 (which is a DARN SHAME because X's VA sung it and boy howdy. This ain’t even subtext, this is just plain text I mean for heaven's sake, he straight up says "I love you" in that song I'M STILL LOSING MY MIND OVER THIS AGH. (The last refrain in the background even sounds like it's from Zero's PoV, heck, he compares X to the sun like he does in the manga!!! I’m a wreck!!!) 

“One More Time” from X3 is another good one. (My exact reaction to hearing it while reading the translations for the first time verbatim was:) 

"I want to remove the obstacles of the heart to reach you" aw. "Because only you know how special you are to me" AW. "I wish to be with you tomorrow" / "Don't forget you're the only one I want" MAN, AND I THOUGHT THE GAMES WERE SUBTLE. HECK. 

But anyways, ZeroX rant aside, I don’t personally see anything Zero Ciel stuff in Clover!

OK BUT HONESTLY- Zero and X are so old by the time the MM0 series rolls around. I know their redesigns make them look a lot younger, but that doesn’t erase the fact that Zero and X are still SUPER OLD and Ciel’s a 14 year old human kid, I was legitimately horrified when I found out people were seriously pairing her with them.

Aw, that’s not a dumb ship! I know a lot of people like shipping the navigators with the main MMX trio, and I know even more people who project onto their ships, haha. But yes, Zero and X make a great pair in any shape or form, be it romantic, platonic, or whatever!

you could do what I do with music and write a bunch of drabbles but never publish them. Just doing it is enough, not every creative piece has to be the tour de france broadcast for the world, sometimes it's enough to just make it (to extend the metaphor, like going for a bike ride anyway)

See, I do that, but I write fanfics specifically because I want to share them! and get praised

Just like with drawing, I write a lot more than I actually post, but fanfics force me to work and pull things together to create something I can broadcast (maybe not to the world, but to the community, which is something I can’t do with my original stories)! I think that's one of the reasons I'm still so nitpicky about my fanfic even though I consider them "practice"— I share them in lieu of my original stories, so they have to measure up! (Not only that, but I’m frustrated with the other stories I see in the tag, and I’m frustrated with parts of the canon, so I take it upon myself to fix that! I have a lot of love for Megaman, so my fanfics also need to live up to that love)
