A boy’s hungry little eyes settled on the gil pouch that hung loosely off the adventurer’s belt. The other children kept nudging his back, giggling, snickering, and whispers,”Go! Go on! Do it! We’ll have your back.” The boy held his breath and slowly crept into the busy crowd of the Ul’dah market. Biting his tongue lightly in concentration, he nears the mark. He lowers himself lower to the ground and lifts his shaky hands to untie the knot. His clumsy fingers nudged the roegadyn’s side, and it took little time before the boy felt the collar of his shirt being yanked up, his legs dangling from the air. He screams in panic,”G-guys! Help!” His hurried attention shifts around the crowd only to see the silhouettes of his fellow friends weave through the crowds and disappear. His eyes widen,”N-no! You said you’d-” He would gasp as the roegadyn shook him. “What’re ye’ think yer doin’, boy?!” The child held his breath once more and stared up at the roegadyn. The child’s eyes began to water. A piercing whistle sounds through the crowd, snatching the roegadyn’s attention for a moment, until a glass projectile smashed the back of his head. He staggers forward and relinquishes his grip on him. The child falls on his back, barely managing to stifle the sniffling, before he felt the back of his shirt being tugged. Another voice, hurried in tone and matching that of the girl dragging him, sang through,”Come on, let’s go!” The boy barely managed to stumble back up to his feet, and the two disappeared off into the crowd.Quite a distance away from the scene, the girl releases her grip of the boy’s hand and rests her arm against the wall to catch her breath. The boy, on the other hand, bends over and brings his hands to his knees, panting heavily. The girl gives the boy one look over before scoffing,”Are you stupid? A mark like that by yourself? You’re either really cocky or really dumb…” She silences herself before adding,”Or both-”“I’m not stupid!” He coughs out and shoots a stubborn glare up at her,”I had backup!”The girl peers back at the boy and rolls her eyes,”Oh yea, and were they in between the time the burly man picked you up and that wine bottle hit him in the head?”He sharply drops his gaze to the stone floor. His eyes begin watering up once more,”They abandoned me… they all did…” The girl frowns and steps right up to him, nudging him roughly in the shoulder,”Hey, stop crying. It’s weird when boys cry, and I don’t know what to do about that. Don’t cry.” She holds her hand out for him,”Emmie.” Cyrus lifts his arm to wipe at his tears before extending his to hold hers,”C-cyrus.”—————————————————————————————————Two pairs of legs dangled off the railing as sounds of laughter filled the landscape of the Shroud,”A-and he ran into the cart. You should have been there, Emmie.” Emmie stares at him, her smile altering into a smirk as she gives him a playful shove,”Idiot, you should have waited for me!” Cyrus’s grin only grew until more laughter slipped from him. After he settled down, he lifts his arm up to his eyes. Emmie snorts,”Still a crybaby as ever.”“H-hey! It’s not crying! It’s from laughing so much!” Emmie rolls her eyes, and Cyrus sticks his tongue out before perking up,”Oh! But… I did… I mean, I went on without you because…” He shuffles his hands into his makeshift satchel,”I got you this.” He holds up a small silver ring. “It seemed valuable, and you like rings, so…”Emmie’s eyes widen and joy over takes her. With a gleeful squee, she snatches the ring up,”Cyrus! This is beautiful! This is-” She cuts herself off, leaning forward to and pecking him on the lips for a brief second before leaning back to admire the ring,”Amazing!” Cyrus’s own eyes widen in shock as he sharply brings his arm to his mouth,”Hey, what was /that/ for?”Emmie smirks and hums delightfully,”That was because you made me really happy, dummy.” She seemed completely oblivious to her friend’s cheeks reddening. After a few more minutes of admiration, she looks up to him,”Cyrus… why?”He blinks and cants his head,”Huh? Oh… well… remember when I said ‘I will make you remember me’?” Emmie giggles softly and nods,”Right when I teased you about forgetting to take you with me to the festival?”Cyrus nods eagerly,”Well… I knew if I got that for you, there’s no way you’d ever forget me.”The girl shakes her head with a content sigh and leans back over to wrap her arms around her,”Oh Cyrus… I could never forget you.”The abrupt ‘kweh’ of his chocobo snaps him from the flashback. He scans the area quickly before settling it on Galipago,”Hm? Oh… sorry…” He chuckles softly,”Was just thinking…” He drops his gaze back to the railing,”Never forgetting me… ended up not mattering anyroad.”————————————————————————————————Tahlari fumbles for the last few coins,”No, no… idiot!” She takes a shaky breath and throws the empty pouch down,”We were supposed to have enough for a week!” She slumps down the wall and hangs her head, shutting her eyes tightly to close off the other miqo’te that stared at her in silence. “L-look… I know it’s my fault… that we’re out here… and not a day goes by where I don’t remember that…” Her eyes water up,”B-but please… please believe me… we had enough. I don’t know where it all went. I swear… I-I’ll make it up. I promise. We don’t have to go back…”@espiflower
