watching my hometown burn from afar is terrifying. watching my friends, acquaintances and community become homeless as their livelihoods as well as everything they know burns to the ground is surreal.

Today for cookies & causes we share Sara’s Pecan Pralines a New Years day favorite & Habitat for Humanity. The MontereyBay Habitat for Humanity where Susan’s neighbor, Frank, received volunteer of the year is offering the next homes they build to people who lost their home in the recent California fires. #dogoodfeelgood #czulightningcomplex #pecanpraline (at Santa Cruz, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJRegvIB_Gm/?igshid=nipdnpzjrtfh
This week the #czulightningcomplex fires 🔥 reported 💯 percent containment; however for the people who returned to lost or damaged homes the impacts of the fire will be felt for sometime. Susan has strangely found herself in a position to help facilitate connecting people in Bonny Doon to resources where they can find assistance. “Who knew” that to receive low interest loans to rebuild a home it was necessary to apply for FEMAs & a SBA loan? She’s learned firsthand about trauma transference, had the privilege of distributing gift cards and praying over individuals who are working through the aftermath of the fire all in a socially distanced way. Friday morning Susan was encouraged to see this lovely bouquet of flowers from a secret admirer had left for folks to enjoy who were stopping by for a meal, information on where to find help or simply conversation. Susan is celebrating the fact that earlier this week she received confirmation that the Feel The Joy nonprofit she’s registered during evacuation has been issued a nonprofit EIN number. The EIN # will enable people to receive a tax deduction when supporting nonprofits curated by Susanville. #spreadmorelove #bonnydoonstrong #prayforbonnydoon #feelthejoyofgiving (at Bonny Doon, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFndGlRA92Q/?igshid=m8ug0mm6nhms
Over the past couple years, if you have been reading our posts, you’ve heard us share how doing good improves health and wellness. Over the three weeks of evacuation, Susan was on the receiving end of a lot of people doing good. She was graciously received into the homes of friends, received updates from neighbors on the front lines of the fire letting her know her home was okay had neighbors check on her chickens & clean her refrigerator. Finally upon returning home, she was able to give back to help her community that had suffered such great losses. Susan began distributing meals at @bonnydoonchurch to her community impacted by wildfire the day after repopulating to her home. Although it hadn’t burned, it didn’t have electricity or water. Thankfully, over the past ten days of distributing food the church has gotten power earlier this week to enable WiFi . Today, she was even able to offer coffee ☕️ thanks to the electricity. The circumstances that put her in a position to offer meals was remarkable. If she hadn’t been staying at her pastor’s house and been invited to a food distribution for evacuees coordinated by @convergence_church she wouldn’t have had the bandwidth or support to provide the assistance. Susan praises the Lord for this opportunity to serve and the many people who have made it possible. Every day more people stop to share their stories and exchange information where to get help. Susan shared her homemade applesauce, a friend brought fresh apples from their yard, another friend made homemade cookies 🍪 individually wrapped to share. #dogoodfeelgood #czulightningcomplex #bonnydoonstrong #spreadmorelove (at Higher Grounds of Bonny Doon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFVgrODnDDJ/?igshid=560rfv62cd6r
