The World Turned Upside Down || Drabble [p1]

A thump coming from somewhere downstairs is what stirs the young teen boy from his sleep. At first it doesn't quite register, a sleepy haze still clouding his mind over and keeping him from processing any rational thought. After he's finally beginning to wake up, he realizes that he did hear a sound and hadn't heard anything since. Maybe Pippa was finally home from work. Had he remembered to leave the light on? Crap. He hoped she hadn't ran into anything and gotten hurt. Begrudgingly the boy pushes himself out of his warm bed, rubbing at his eyes as he heads out of his room. No one was home tonight except for he, Ara, and Pippa. It was a full moon so all the werewolves of the household had been gone for several hours and wouldn't be returning until sometime tomorrow just like they did every month.

As Riley heads down the stairs, he realizes Ara must be sleeping since he didn't hear her moving around, which was a little odd. He'd noticed she'd never seemed to sleep particularly well when Xander wasn't around. He shrugs it off and continues down the stairs, wanting to make sure his sister was alright. If he was more awake, maybe he would have realized that it was still too early for Pippa to be home and he would have noticed that sick nervous feeling in the pit of his stomach that should have alerted him to something being off.

He reaches the bottom of the stairs, frowning when he realizes that he had left the light on. Maybe she'd turned it on and made her way to the kitchen. The teen pads softly through the living room, trying to keep quiet so he won't wake his older brother's girlfriend. “Pippa?” He calls out in a loud whisper as he moves towards the kitchen. “Pip? Are you alright? I thought I heard...” The second he steps fully into the kitchen and sees that it's empty, that bad feeling finally kicks in. Something is wrong. He glances to the clock. Too early for his sister to be home. “Ara?” He calls out, his voice much louder than before and sticking out starkly against the previously quiet setting. Downstairs. He needed to check the basement apartment.

There is no doubt that Riley is awake now, running fully on adrenaline as he convinces himself that he's just being dramatic and there's no reason to call Pippa. He'll go downstairs, see Ara is fine, and then realize he was just being crazy. That doesn't stop him from half running down the stairs to get to the apartment that Xander and his girlfriend shared. “Ara?” He steps out into the small apartment, nervously glancing around. “Ara, are you-” His question is cut off as he is hit in the head, a sharp pain shooting through his skull before his vision begins to go spotty. The boy is grabbed from behind, an arm snaking around his throat and cutting off his air supply. Riley fights as much as he can considering how disoriented he is from the hit, but it's only seconds before he goes down and his vision goes completely black. His last coherent thought was one of terror. His sister had no idea what she'd be walking into.
