Infiniment Petit.
Dînette en porcelaine.
One of the best things about Berlin is brunch. I love how it’s such a huge thing in this city – especially on weekends. It’s my favourite meal, after all. Breakfast food without having to wake up early plus mimosas? Why, count me in!
So, it’s only fitting that I do a series paying homage to my favourite Berlin weekend tradition. Our first stop? Brunchette by Dînette.
Brunchette is done on Sundays and you’ll have to call in advance for a reservation. Dînette, the restaurant that hosts this brunch affair, usually announces its availability via their Facebook page.
Excited brunch faces!
If Dînette wasn’t located all the way in Friedrichshain, I would prolly be there almost everyday. I guess this is really where your kiez (neighbourhood) comes into play. It’s a bit of a distance from my kiez but I am more than willing to make the trek maybe once every few weeks.
The Brunchette Ambiance
The small restaurant gives off a cosy, laid-back vibe. We went during the last few days of summer and the temperature was already dropping despite the sun still showing itself on the daily.
Upon entering the restaurant, you’ll notice the warm lighting while the huge windows flood the area with sunlight. That is, if the sun’s around. We were pretty lucky that day.
Some coffee to get things started.
It won’t be Berlin Brunches without the food
Ah, the menu. Where do I even begin? Theirs s pretty concise yet solid when it comes to selection. You have perfectly poached eggs and a choice of gravlax or bacon for a decadent Eggs Benedict.
There’s also the Transcroque that comes with spinach, onions, mushroom, truffle oil, and Béchamel.
The first two dishes went to the men. For my friend Sarah and I, it was pancake day. We’ve been craving for a while and we just had to get some that weekend. Especially after a botched attempt at making some after I misread some German instructions at the back of a pancake mix box. It was a rather difficult week for my ego and I knew I had to have some.
Look at that fluffy goodness. My only complaint is that I only got one! This pancake came with some self smoked ricotta, maple sirup, bacon, and fried, sunny-side-up egg. The yolk went oozing all over my pancake the moment I broke it – just the way I like it.
As for the price point, it’s on the mid-range scale. A meal at Brunchette would cost you an average of EUR15 per person. It may be pretty steep for Berlin considering there are places where you can go for a EUR6 brunch buffet.
Take this is a ‘treat yo’self’ kind of thing for the weekend – especially if you’ve been good with your finances the whole week. The servings are also pretty filling so you may not reach for something to eat until way later in the day. You can also taste that the ingredients are of really good quality. So, all in all, it was really worth the money.
The area where Brunchette is held is only a stone’s throw away from the Spree. The riverbank offers a good view of the Oberbaumbrücke, making it perfect for a post-brunch walk. There’s also some pretty cool architecture that will make you want to snap some photos.
