D. Smith was homeless when she started shooting this documentary about the sex industry, and we can sense the fury and rawness of the conditions under which this film was made. Art can sometimes be a savior.

But not for everybody. Koko, one of the main subjects of this movie was murdered soon after filming - the victim of a hate crime. The film is dedicated to her.

You will definitely want to smoke a blunt along with these girls, especially the one who says “I just don’t have a heart for men.” Weirdly turns out to be, in a big way, about how men oppress women and themselves in turn, and how gender essentialist thought will bankrupt us all. It shows the way black trans women have to be everything to everybody, the way they compress themselves into shapes to fit. Also touches on the inequities capitalism forces us to acquaint ourselves with — you will never question the inherent value of Benihana the way this film will have you doing — and shows us the face of those most affected by these inequities. Funny and heartbreaking in a million ways. Edgy and dangerous. I hope people see this.
