On This Day In History . 12 November 1537 . Jane Seymour's funeral . . ◼ Jane Seymour (Born c. 1508 – died.24 October 1537) was Queen of England from 1536 to 1537 as the third wife of King Henry VIII. She succeeded Anne Boleyn as queen consort following the latter's execution in May 1536. She was publicly proclaimed as queen consort on 4 June 1536. Jane’s well-publicised sympathy for the late Queen Katharine & the Lady Mary showed her to be compassionate & made her a popular figure with the common people &  most of the courtiers. She was never crowned because of plague in London, where the coronation was to take place. . ◼ She died of postnatal complications less than two weeks after the birth of her only child, a son who became King Edward VI. . ◼ Jane was buried on 12 November 1537 in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle after the funeral in which her stepdaughter, Mary (later Queen Mary I), acted as chief mourner. A procession of 29 mourners followed Lady Mary, one for every year of Queen Jane’s life. Jane was the only one of Henry's wives to receive a queen's funeral. . The following inscription was above her grave for a time: . 'Here lieth a Phoenix, by whose death . Another Phoenix life gave breath: . It is to be lamented much . The world at once ne'er knew two such'. . ◼ After her death, Henry wore black for the next three months & did not remarry for three years, although marriage negotiations were tentatively begun soon after her death. Moreover, he put on weight during his long widowerhood, becoming obese & swollen & developing diabetes & gout. Historians have speculated she was Henry's favourite wife because she gave birth to a male heir. On This Day In History . 12 November 1035 . King Cnut the Great died at Shaftesbury in Dorset, and was buried in the Old Minster, Winchester. . . About Cnut; . 👑 Cnut the Great (born, ; c. 985 or 995), more commonly known as Canute, was a king of Denmark, England, Norway & parts of Sweden, together often referred to as the Anglo-Scandinavian or North Sea Empire. . ◼ After his death, the deaths of his heirs within a decade, & the Norman conquest of England in 1066, his legacy was largely lost to history. . ◼ Cnut's father was Sweyn Forkbeard, King of Denmark (which gave Cnut the patronym Sweynsson, Old Norse Sveinsson). The identity of his mother is uncertain. . ◼ As a Prince of Denmark, Cnut won the throne of England in 1016 in the wake of centuries of Viking activity in northwestern Europe. His accession to the Danish throne in 1018 brought the crowns of England & Denmark together. Cnut maintained his power by uniting Danes & English under cultural bonds of wealth & custom, rather than by sheer brutality. . ◼ After a decade of conflict with opponents in Scandinavia, Cnut claimed the crown of Norway in Trondheim in 1028. The Swedish city Sigtuna was held by Cnut. He had coins struck there that called him king, but there is no narrative record of his occupation. . ◼ The kingship of England lent the Danes an important link to the maritime zone between the islands of Great Britain & Ireland, where Cnut, like his father before him, had a strong interest & wielded much influence among the Norse-Gaels. . ◼ Cnut's possession of England's dioceses & the continental Diocese of Denmark with a claim laid upon it by the Holy Roman Empire's Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen was a source of great leverage within the Catholic Church, gaining notable concessions from Pope Benedict VIII & his successor John XIX, such as one on the price of the pallium of his bishops.
