Æthelstan: The First King of a United England
Æthelstan (c. 894–939) was one of the most important rulers of early English history and is often considered the first true King of England. The grandson of Alfred the Great, he inherited the ambitions of the House of Wessex and transformed a collection of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms into a more unified realm.
After defeating rivals and expanding his power, Æthelstan controlled territories across England and became known as a powerful warrior and skilled diplomat. His victory at the Battle of Brunanburh in 937 helped secure his dominance and became one of the most celebrated military victories in Anglo-Saxon history.
Beyond warfare, Æthelstan supported learning, law, and the church. His court attracted scholars from across Europe, and his reign helped lay the foundations for the later English kingdom.
Though his rule lasted only about 15 years, Æthelstan’s legacy was enormous — he was the king who helped turn England from a collection of rival kingdoms into a united nation.
