Bruce trudged into the Avengers Headquarters, Robert still tucked securely in his arms. Now, the infant had nuzzled his little face into Bruce’s warm, bare chest. The rain had made him very cold, and Bruce was worried that he might Hulk-out again before he could even change him out of his wet clothes.
He stumbled up to your room, feeling more and more nauseous as he made his way. Then as he reached the hallway of bedrooms for each Avenger, he was met by Tony.
“Hey, Brucie, how was father-son time?” He asked, not taking note of Bruce’s lack of clothing except the tattered pants.
Bruce felt the aches in his muscles and began to sweat profusely. He looked to Tony weakly, unable to speak. Tony’s face then hardened with concern, taking Robert from Bruce’s arms.
“Green bean showed up, didn’t he?” Tony asked, taking Robert from Bruce’s arms. “And your radiation sickness is starting. Let’s get you to your room.” He said, grabbing Bruce firmly by the arm and dragging him down the hallway.
Bruce looked at Robert, who was beginning to whimper. The realization hit him. Robert was going to suffer from the radiation sickness, too.
“FRIDAY, notify Mrs. Banner, well not Mrs. yet, but get (Y/N) up here because Bruce just de-Hulked,” Tony said as he opened the door to the room.
“Yes, sir. She is still in the recreational area with Agent Romanoff. Would you like me to notify her anyway?” The AI Answered.
“Yes, please, that would be great,” Tony mumbled as he helped Bruce onto the bed before placing Robert into the crib. “Okay, Bruce, it will be routine as usual. Just go through the motions and it will be over before you know it.”
Bruce tried to speak, but then his skin began to burn and blister. He groaned in pain, and that’s when Robert began to cry. Tony leaned over the crib to check on the infant, and his eyes widened.
“Holy Mother of God…” Tony mumbled before looking back to Bruce. “He Hulked-out, didn’t he? Robert has it, too.” He said.
Bruce nodded weakly. Tony pulled the crib closer to him, so he could monitor both Bruce and Robert. “FRIDAY, give me vital signs on Robert Banner.” He said worriedly, watching sadly as both Bruce and Robert suffered from painful blisters and intensifying burns on the skin.
“Do you mean Agent Robert Bruce Banner, or his son, Robert Bruce Banner, Jr.?” FRIDAY responded.
Tony nodded. “Why don’t you just give me both, please? And tell Rogers and Barton to get their asses in here, too. I’m gonna need some help.” He replied.
“Yes, sir,” FRIDAY said before notifying the other requested Avengers.
A holographic screen appeared above both Robert and Bruce, detailing the heart rate and other vital signs. Clint and Steve ran into the room.
“FRIDAY said there was a Code Purple,” Steve said as he stepped closer to Bruce, knowing that soon they would have to hold him down because the pain would be too much to bear.
Tony looked up at them and shook his head. “There are two Code Purples.” He replied, picking up Robert in his arms and shoving him into Clint’s.
Clint’s father instincts kicked in, and he began to bounce the infant in his arms to try and soothe the crying. “Robert has it, too?” He asked sadly.
Tony nodded. “Yes, and his skin is blistering, too. That baby is in pain just like his father.” He replied, equally upset about the situation.
“Does (Y/N) know about this?” Steve asked.
And as if on cue, you rushed into the room. “What happened?!” You asked frantically. “Is Robert okay? Did the Hulk-“
Tony walked over to you and grabbed your shoulders to ground you. “Robert has it, too.” He said firmly.
You stared at him, not understanding what ‘it’ meant. “Tony, wha-“
And you were cut off by screams. At the same time, Bruce and Robert began to seize. Your world began to spin. Clint placed Robert back into the crib and stood back to monitor his condition. Steve and Tony pushed Bruce onto his side. You didn’t know whether to run to Robert or Bruce, so you remained planted, still in shock.
Clint looked to you. “Robert will be okay. If Bruce is always okay, then Robert will be okay.” He tried to assure you.
The words did help a little, but you burst into tears anyway. It was difficult enough to worry about Bruce every time he Hulked-out, but now you had to worry about your son, too.
Eventually, both Robert and Bruce stopped seizing. And Tony grabbed the closest receptacle he could, so Bruce could vomit. And he did, as he always does, violently but weakly. You quickly took Robert into your arms and grabbed a towel. Luckily, it was no different than the usual spit-up that he had multiple times a day.
Soon the vomiting spells ended. Bruce was nearly unconscious on the bed. Clint and Steve walked out without saying another word. Tony looked to you and placed a hand on your back.
“I have FRIDAY monitoring both of their vital signs. If anything abnormal happens, she will let you know.” He assured you before stepping out as well.
While Bruce was regaining the color in his pale face, you changed Robert into new clothes before placing him in his crib. Robert had ceased his cries and fell asleep for a much-needed nap. You crawled onto the bed, laying next to Bruce.
Bruce opened his eyes, and they were already filled with tears. “I’m so sorry, (Y/N).” He breathed.
You wanted to say everything was okay. You wanted to tell him that it wasn’t his fault. You wanted to say anything to make Bruce feel better, but you knew that he would just throw it back in your face.
“We knew that this was a possibility.” You replied, running your fingers through Bruce’s dampened curls.
But then he broke into sobs. You pulled him close so that his face was able to bury into your neck. “He’s damned for the rest of his life, (Y/N). He will suffer for the rest of his life.” He cried.
You wanted to cry, too. Because now both of your loves were living with an incurable disorder. Now both of your loves were suffering.
“Bruce, he will learn to adapt. He’s not like you. He will grow up with this and know how to live with it. He won’t live 26 years of his life perfectly and happily like you did and then have to deal with it. He will just live with it.” You tried to assure him, even though you didn’t even seem to assure yourself.
Bruce wrapped his arms around you tightly. “I don’t want him to have to deal with it. I don’t want him to have to suffer.” He whispered.
You sighed and kissed Bruce’s forehead gently. “Did the two of you Hulk-out at the same time?” You asked.
“Lightning struck a tree outside, and it threw me back. It was very loud, and I could feel the Other Guy starting to get angry. But I held it back until I noticed that Robert was turning green. It was too much for me, and the Other Guy took over.” Bruce explained.
You nodded. “Do you remember anything in between?” You asked.
Bruce was quiet for a moment. “Actually,” he said, “I remember everything…”
You looked at him, smiling slightly. “That’s new.” You said, trying to distract him from the obvious misfortunes.
Bruce nodded. “Yeah, it is new…the Other Guy, he was so in love with Robert when he was like that. I think because nobody else is like him. And to have Robert made him feel like he wasn’t alone. And Robert, when he was green, he loved him, too.” He wondered aloud.
You smiled and grabbed one of Bruce’s hands. “See, there is a good side to him.” You teased.
Bruce scoffed and rolled his eyes. “Oh, please. It’s just a soft spot.” He replied. But then he smiled a little bit. “It was weird. It was like for a moment, we were the same mind because we were both so worried about Robert.”
“Well, having kids will do that to you, I guess.” You replied before looking over to the crib. “He’s going to be okay, Bruce. You’re okay, so he’ll be okay.”
Bruce nodded and held you closer to him. “I’ll make sure that he’s always okay.” He whispered.
