I’ve been pondering doing this for a while, and preliminary tests that I’ve run tonight suggest it will work, so I’m going to go ahead and do it: I’m changing the back-end engine that does the actual text generation for this blog. This is a big change in a lot of ways, and I care about what my followers think, so I wanted to take the time to explain to you what’s going on.

For a long time—as long as this blog’s been running, in fact—the text has actually been generated by Jamie Zawinski’s program DadaDodo, which generates random text by modeling a source text (or corpus of texts) as a series of Markov chains, then randomly traversing those chains. This works quite well in many ways: it doesn’t need a knowledge of grammar to do this, and the results are often quite good. So far, every post you’ve read on this blog that’s not an admin post—all 1,444 of them, is the number that it happens to be at the moment—have been generated by DadaDodo, though the details of the script calling it have changed quite a bit over the last just-over-two-years.

DadaDodo’s done some good writing for me during that time, but I’ve become gradually more dissatisfied with the results. “DadaDodo doesn't work quite as well as I would like it to,” Zawinski says, but “DadaDodo is still kinda cool, though.” I agree; I've just gradually become frustrated by my inability to control what goes on inside its black box. 

So, from here on out, the text will be written by a Python module that I’ve adapted heavily from from Harry R. Schwartz’s Markov chain–based text generator. This gives me the chance to tweak the generator’s operation and control some of its internal parameters; in particular, I’m looking forward to controlling its treatment of punctuation and capitalization, and to redefine “current state” to include chains longer than one word.

But, you know, I do want to hear from you about whether you think the new back end is or is not an improvement. I’ll be tweaking its settings over the next few weeks. Let me know how you think things are working; the blog’s About page has a variety of contact information.
