Burning. One wouldn’t have imaged that water could burn. Yet here she was being smothered in it. Suffocating in it. Slowly, being fully aware that she was slowly dying and being unable to do anything. Yet despite it all, it was beautiful.The light filtering in, like cloth caught in a breeze. Everything appearing like a painting. It was a beautiful way to die and yet, it was not meant for her.

Was she screaming to live? Or was it the cry of someone else?

It felt like someones gentle caress, the way the waves woke her.

“I’m, alive?” Only the moon, stars, and sea were present to hear her question. Yet they provided no answers. Her lungs still burned, a reminder of what had transpired was no dream.

If it was no dream, then what she had seen - what she had heard, was real.

The letter long forgotten.

My dearest daughter,

Well, I don’t know if I can call you my daughter but you feel like mine. You’re so tinny tiny. Your father dropped you off yesterday and I was scared. I’d never met you and here you are all of a sudden apart of my life. I haven’t seen Itsuki or heard from him but I’ve defiantly been visited by your aunt a few times and you’ve only been here a day.

You’re weak now but I can see in your eyes you’re a little fighter. They glow and just a little bit ago I finally got you stable and asleep. I’ll protect you, and care for you as much as I can. I can’t wait to see how beautiful you become because it’s gonna be hard to get prettier than you are now.

I just wanted to write you a letter because your aunt made it seem like as soon as you were well she is gonna take you away and I want to send you home with a part of me. Something to remember me by. To let you know how much I love you. I hope your father will tell you but if I can’t speak to him I’ll have to make note of it somewhere for you.

None of my medicines or magic was working. In fact it was making you worse. Wolves have a hard time with magic, and so the only thing I could do was give you half of my essence, or my soul. It’s yours. You needed something with power and strength to help you along and guide you.

I hope you know how much I love you and it’s only been a day.

I’ll always love my pup, even if your only mine for a little while.

*the signature was half faded and almost gone but it was clearly from her dadai. In the box underneath the letter was a photo flipped upside down. It was a picture of Dadai curled up around her as a tinny pup all asleep against his chest. They were both sleeping silently. The only picture of them together when she was little.*
