Our lovely, sweet and gentle Dad thought selfies were odd, an exercise in vanity for the most part, so I teased him about this self-snap he took at The Governor Clinton Hotel in NYC, 1958. Testing the camera, he insisted. He’s in his RAF uniform, and just 22, eight years before he met and married Mum, and 10 years before I showed up. He took his last “flight” last evening at 7:37 — appropriate given his lifelong appreciation of aircrafts. Dad sure could choose his moments. Today is the anniversary of the first time he walked our mum home from church, and the beginning of their love story. A month later they were engaged, and six months later they were married. Dad had a goofy side, and a reflexive way with puns, not all of them good 😂 He was incredibly generous — in the 1960s he used to buy and repair old broken TVs to give to low-income seniors in his neighbourhood (until his boss realized he could fix them and refused to sell him any more broken sets). For deaf seniors, he’d rig a red light above the TV that would flash when someone rang the doorbell. And on the rare occasion he ever won a little money, he’d donate it immediately to a cause in need (in addition to his regular charitable donations). Barrington was actually Dad’s first name, but he preferred Barry — he thought Barrington was pretentious. Indeed, we teased him that such a name ought to have come with a vastly large and prosperous inherited estate and bank account, which it did NOT 😂 Miss you already, Dad. Thank you for leaving us with so much love, laughter and so many examples of how to be a kind, thoughtful human. We hope we can consistently live up to such a legacy. By the way, I’m keeping your watch, and if I find that camera, I’m keeping it too. ❤️ #RIP #flyFalconfly #loveyouDad #Dad #DadSelfie #selfie1958 #RAF #tbt #camera #maninuniform #family #❤️ #Beautygeeks (at Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIjCyugBKx0/?igshid=1focgehyr4f69
