Daein’s Secret | Micaiah, Pelleas, & Volke

The reconstruction of Daein was hardly a simple feat. With two recent wars reaching the nation’s soil, there were various damages to essential infrastructure, settlements, as well as the governing body itself. In an earnest attempt to relief her people of the burden, Micaiah had spent countless hours assigning soldiers to destinations to complete the repairs as well as provide assistance to those in need. While the maiden considered the necessity of each public works project carefully, there was an underlying problem that was undeniable: Daein’s funds were limited. The Mad King Ashnard squandered funds unnecessarily building a formidable army. When Pelleas was in power, he was forced to spend Daein’s gold on war as a result of the Blood Pact and conflict with Begnion. This left Micaiah in a difficult position.

The people of Daein were already poor as a result of such wars and she couldn’t increase their burden through greater taxation. Surely, their had to be another way. Taking in a deep breath, Micaiah scanned over the financial paperwork once more. She had managed finances for the Daein Liberation Army, but doing so for a castle yielded a far greater pressure. 

“Pelleas...has Daein’s treasury truly been drained this low? Are you sure that there isn’t any other gold stashes?” She asked, feeling greatly concerned. Daein would thrive, but it seemed that the reconstruction would be forced to expand out much further than she had anticipated.

Drapes, Dishes, & A Dress | Micaiah & Pelleas

Micaiah’s voice was unmistakable, the tone and quality of it Pelleas kept stored away in a special part of his memories. It always made him feel warm, even in the icy chill of Daein’s winters, and he turned, almost on instinct, with smile already prepared to greet her. That she would be out looking for him sent a faint flush to his cheeks.

“Ah, Lady Micaiah. I would be more than happy to help, but…” He closed the book he had been looking through - a collection of Crimean poetry - and dropped his eyes down. His smile turned as embarrassed as hers. “I’m afraid that I’m useless in that area, too.”

And as his performance during the war indicated, it was perhaps his indecision that was more of a vice than his general lack of knowledge. He straightened up suddenly though, inhaled, and met Micaiah’s gaze with as much confidence as he could muster. Even if he wasn’t confident at all, he was learning that sometimes feigning could be enough.

“But I’m honored that you would seek me out, so I will do everything I can to assist.” His expression took on a quality that was uncharacteristically serious. This was an honor provided to him by the Queen of Daein - but more importantly, it was Micaiah, and he hated the idea of disappointing her more than disappointing any monarch.

“What about the castle’s maintenance is giving you trouble?” he asked.

At Pelleas’s confession, Micaiah laughed. It seemed neither of them were the greatest at the role of being a monarch, but nonetheless, she sought out his advice all the same. Though there were many that questioned her reasoning, the maiden believed in Pelleas, even for the smallest of tasks. She could feel sense his sincerity in everything he did and his love for Daein was absolute. She trusted him and it was no surprise that the two had become good friends. 

Once she received Pelleas confirmation, she strode over to his desk, holding a stack of papers close to her chest. Then carefully as to not drop them, she placed them down onto the wooden surface, leaning over to search for the first item that had been brought to her attention. He murmured intelligibly to herself as she sorted, her eyes searching for a specific document.

“Oh!” Her eyes light up as she placed a document to the top of the stack, which additionally contained an envelope filled with bits fabric in various colors.

“I was asked to select drapes for the upcoming winter ball. In truth, I haven’t the slightest idea on something like this...they said it needed to match the dishes, but be a different color from my dress...both of which I haven’t decided either,” She admitted, “I never had drapes before coming to the castle. I have no idea what makes a set...good?”

Fresh cut grass: when the weather is warm, what activities do you do outside?

“I really enjoy being outside,” Micaiah replied, her golden eyes glowing with the same peaceful, soft light as dying embers, “I’ve done a lot of traveling, even before fighting for Daein. There’s nothing like sailing on a perfect summer day! The sunlight glistening off the water, the taste of salt in the breeze, and the sound of the waves surrounding you…oh, but, I also like simpler things!” She added, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear.

“Picnics are always nice. A quiet lunch under the warmth of the sun is peaceful, don’t you think?”

22) Does your character trust someone right off the bat or does it take some time to warm up to someone?

Maria definitely leans more towards the former; while she doesn’t trust as easily and immediately as she used to, her ‘immediate trust’ level has really only gone down about. 1%. She believes that there’s good to be found in everyone, but while she still trusts easily, she’s less gullible, and thinks more before she makes any rash decisions. ...She could still do to be more cautious, though.
