The 55th Daejong Film Awards ceremony was just held in the evening of 22nd October at the Grand Theater of Sejong Center for Performing Arts.

Lee Chang Dong’s mystery-thriller BURNING won Best Film (or Best Picture) of the year at The 55th Daejong Film Awards (also referred to as the Grand Bell Awards), the highest prize in the festival.

Actor Sol Kyung-Gu 설경구 won the best lead actor award at 2017 Grand Bell Awards (October 25, 2017) with his performance in The Merciless 불한당 : 나쁜 놈들의 세상 (2017). Here is his acceptance speech.

Thank you. (cough)

I've been very disappointed that The Merciless team couldn't win any award despite receiving many nominations, but (lifting his trophy) finally we got ONE. (Cheers from the crowds)

I'm wearing one of my costumes in The Merciless here today. Receiving this award in my costume makes me feel odd as if I'm still in the movie and Mr. Im Siwan is standing next to me. I really miss Mr. Im Siwan. (*)

I just want to say thank you to Director Byun Sung-hyun who ironed me out, (**) (Then, he calls the names of CJ Producer, the movie company CEO, his agency boss, and the filming staff, etc.) And many thanks to my Hee-Won and Heo Jun-Ho. (***) and my comrade, Song Yoon-Ah. (****)

The Merciless has ended its official theatrical screening, but my beloved Bulhandangwon 불한당원 不汗黨員 (the enthusiastic fans of The Merciless) have continued to rent theaters for their private screenings for the past several months. Thank you very very much for loving this movie. And I really love you, my fans, for giving everything with a free hand.  

It feels like the older I grow, the less cards I can show you, but I'll try my best to show you a new different card in my every film. By the way, this is my first time in 15 years to stand on this Grand bell award ceremony stage. I've never posed in a way like this. I'll pose just for 3 seconds and out. Thank you.

(* Mr. Im Siwan 임시완씨 - The two male leads of The Merciless are still very close. According to Sol Kyung-Gu's interview in September 2017, he was standing over Siwan while Siwan's head was being shaved at a barber's just before he joined the mandatory military service. He sent off Siwan in person, and they are still contacting each other.)

(** Director Byun Sung-hyun 변성현 감독 who ironed him out - When they first met for The Merciless, Sol Kyung-Gu told Director Byun "I was impressed by your comment about your previous movie. You said "Ji Sung 지성 has so clean and good image that I wants to crumple him" So, how about me? Do you want to crumple me, too?" Then Director Byun answered "No. You are already crumpled. So I want to iron you out and make you starched stiffly." As he guaranteed, the director transformed the middle-aged actor who likes comfortable casual outfits into a sexy gangster dressed in a smart suit, which made the actor win a lot of young female fans.)    

(*** My Hee-Won 우리 희원씨 and Heo Jun-Ho Sunbae-nim 허준호 선배님. - Actor Kim Hee-won 김희원 played Byung-Gap who has a secret crush on his orphanage friend Jae-Ho (Sol Kyung-Gu's character) in The Merciless. Actor Heo Jun-Ho 허준호 played the gang boss killed in the prison by Jae-Ho and Hyun-Soo in the middle of the movie. )

불한당이 후보에 많이 올랐는데 수상이 잘 많이 안돼서 많이 실망했었는데, (상을 들어보이며) 하나 건졌습니다.

제가 오늘 불한당 의상을 입고 왔습니다. 의상을 입고 상을 받으니까, 영화 속에 있는 듯한 묘한 감정도 들고, 임시완 씨가 옆에 있을 것 같고, 임시완 씨가 참 많이 보고 싶습니다.

저를 빳빳하게 펴준 변성현 감독님, 그리고 CJ의 이진희 피디님, 그리고 안은미 대표님, 많은 스탭분들 너무 감사드리고. 우리 희원씨 고맙습니다. 그리고 허준호 선배님 너무너무 감사드리고요. 그리구 우리 백창주 대표님, 그리고 저의 동지 송윤아씨. 너무 감사드립니다.

불한당은 공식 상영은 끝났지만 지금 제가 사랑하는 불한당, 불한당원들이 단관 행사를 계속 이어가고 있습니다. 끝까지 사랑해 주셔서 너무너무 감사드리고요. 그리고 제게 아낌없이 모든 걸 주는 저의 팬 여러분들 너무 사랑합니다. 

나이가 먹을수록 더 꺼낼 카드가 별로 없는데, 작품마다 새로운 카드를 꺼내기 위해서 노력하겠습니다. 그리고 제가 15년만에 이 무대, 대종상 무대에 섰습니다. 이전까지 한 번도 폼을 못 잡아 봤습니다. 제가 3초만 폼 잡고 아웃되겠습니다. 감사합니다. (포즈)
