The payphone just outside the base was twenty-five cents to use, and the Engineer had spent two dollars worth of phone calls with no one on the other end, just the endless ringing of a phone from a man that would never pick up. Maybe he just wasn’t home, maybe he moved... maybe he knew who was on the other end and he was purposefully not answering.
She hung up, keeping her hand on the phone for a few lingering moments, then she heard something behind her. She tensed up whirrled around, startled to see how close her former enemy had come before she noticed. She grimaced, then said to him.
“I know old habits die hard n’ all, but if we’re gunna start werkin’ t’gether, y’ need t’ learn t’ not do that.” She grew quiet, dialing the last number and putting her ear to the receiver again. Still no answer, she sighed and hung up.
“Ah’m sorry, did... did y’ need t’ use th’ phone?”
