Little history / culture lesson for today: Daigo Temple, in southern Kyoto, was supported in its 16th century restoration and reconstruction by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, whose crest is prominent throughout the shrine - it’s the leafy crest on each of the center doors, flanked on the left and right by the Imperial family crest. If the Toyotomi crest’s preferential treatment weren’t enough, the stone tablet just outside the doors mandates that *all* who enter must dismount - even the Emperor himself. The whole place exudes pride in both power and beauty, which makes it feel a little weird compared to the stoic, reverential gardens found at other temples in Kyoto.
