Follow Through

Whether a plague of the creative mind or ADHD, following through can be the most difficult part of being an artist. I am not saying to follow through on any idea you have ever conceived, but it is easy to miss out on really great opportunities by not sticking with a few. 

Quick Tips:

Write down any idea you have whether big, little, art or business

Keep a journal, a folder, a Google doc or a drop box and put every single idea in it. Review it daily or weekly.

Almost every single person I have ever talked to or listened to that was successful said to pick an idea and go with it, and having too many ideas will limit your success. I don't think this is an absolute truth, but it definitely helps to focus on one thing at a time. 

Art is Love: 

Art is a relationship between your thoughts and the physical world. Like any relationship, there are several stages of growth and demise. 

In the beginning it is magical. You eat, sleep, and breathe the relationship. You don't want to be away from it. Next comes a period where the newness wears away and you start to want to have your own personal space and freedom. This is where a lot of relationships end and people search for that magic feeling again. 

However, if you follow through during this segment, the relationship goes from a balancing act to a rock solid foundation and only goes up from there. Art is no different. 

You will absolutely love your new project. You won't be able to take your mind off it. You will slack off at your day job so you can sneak in a little time to work on it. Then the newness wears off and it actually just becomes "work". This is where most projects die and new ideas are born to get that magic back. Don't cheat on yourself. Commit to the project, do the work, and you will be surprised with how successful you will become.
