Well, I didn’t want this but here we have it. At least this isn’t one of the sad ones.

“Have I shown you this—”

“Yes.”

“What about—”

“Yes.”

“But—”

“Yes.”

“You're not even looking anymore,” Roy pouted, so Hughes looked around at him. He was practically cooing at the photos of his two boys and wife, elbows all over Hughes’ paperwork. He was making goo goo eyes at the photos; since the kids were only four and five, it was understandable. And even after two years, Mustang was still not over what he called a “paternal high”.

“Better than snuff,” he said with a keening lilt in his voice, “better than booze, better than sex. There’s nothing like coming home to their little feet running around. Every day—every day!—I open the door, and they're there before I can say anything, hugging me and telling me about their days. They're just perfect! I love my sons. And my wife! My beautiful wife, did I show you—”

“Of course I'm not looking,” Hughes drawled, turning back to his paperwork. “You've shown me the same goddamn picture, just in three different goddamn angles. And this isn't even the first time I've seen them. Yes, your kids are cute—”

“Aren't they??” Roy crowed.

Hughes ground his teeth. “Yes, your wife is beautiful—”

“She’s perfect! I'm the luckiest man alive!”

“But if you want to show me something, at least show me something new!” Hughes finished with a smirk, leaning back in his chair. He knew that Roy didn't have anything new; his camera had broken last week, and Hughes “hadn't got around” to fixing it yet.

Indeed, Roy paused and finally, for just a blessèd moment, fell silent. Then… “ah ha! Don't you worry, Maesy!” He immediately started undoing his military coat and reached a hand in, grabbing something from the front pocket of his undershirt. “Look at what Al drew for me yesterday!! He's so talented!! Look at all these colors and shapes—he's a little artist!”

Hughes shot to his feet and pointed a shaking finger toward the door, and practically shrieked, “DON’T YOU HAVE WORK TO DO!!”

Roy finally seemed to get it, because he gathered his photos and the picture Al drew and dashed for the door. He stepped outside, then poked his head back in, winked, and said, “you'll get it when you finally marry your lieutenant!”

Had he been out of the door any later, a pen would have smacked him in the forehead. He rushed back to his office.

First Lieutenant Gracia Munoz just sighed and set aside the picture Roy had so graciously left for her. Daily shenanigans, she supposed. Those boys would grow out of it eventually.
