So I Saw This Costume...

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever / Barbra Streisand as Daisy Gamble

I legit don't know whether this dress that matches the drapery and the armchair is an abomination or a stroke of genius. Looking closely, I don't think it's exactly the same as the curtains, but it's close enough to blend in. And it seems to match the chair exactly.

As the 1960s bled into the 1970s, fabric patterns got extremely busy for a while. Stuff from just a couple of years earlier is generally a lot cleaner in design.

June: Brown Redux

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever / Barbra Streisand as Daisy Gamble

This is the costume we first see Daisy in, a brown mini-length jumper with polka-dotted tie over what looks almost like a man's dress shirt. In close-up, we can see that the "shirt" layer has subtle striping, possibly just textural variation. Daisy wears this combo with white tights and white Mary Jane shoes. (Trivia: Mary Jane shoes are named after Buster Brown's girlfriend!)

To my eyes, this combination looks rather little-girlish and may be intended to hint at Daisy's lack of maturity. But that may be reading it through a more contemporary lens, and perhaps it didn't look that way to audiences in 1970.

February: Orange Redux

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever / Barbra Streisand as Daisy Gamble

With the shoulder cape and large round hat, this outfit always makes me think of the children's book character Madeline:

It may even be deliberate!

This minidress is fairly simple in its design, with subtle vertical lines running down the front center, plus some large patch pockets and turned-back cuffs. I like the effect of the white hose and pumps, and the orange ribbon on the white hat.
