((In response to two people)
"Hobgoblins are an interesting group," Krenko explained. "They're not as vicious as boggarts, and they're not as malicious as redcaps, but if someone endangers their territory, they don't wait around for explanations."
"Good," Elspeth said. "Mirrodin could use reinforcements who will violently defend their homes."
"Well, you are the mage, not me. Try and summon one up."
Elspeth reached out for the white mana and began casting the spell Krenko had given her. It felt odd, as though the mana was warping in the casting, and she could feel a surge of emotion, that sensation of unique fury that comes only when defending something worth protecting. What she summoned required only the white mana she was skilled with, but the effect had undeniably become red in the casting.
An orange-skinned goblin, clad in kithkin peasant garb, appeared in front of her, holding a pitchfork in both hands. "Hey, lady! Hey, Krenko! What's wrong?"
"Elspeth, Dak. Dak, Elspeth."
Elspeth looked down at the hob. "The home of my friends is under attack, and Krenko said you could help. I was hoping to see your skills." She gestured to a training dummy set nearby.
Dak moved in a blur. He darted in some twent feet, plunged his pitchfork into the dummy, and then closed the last few feet a second later, slamming a spade into the straw man's face.
"...Well, I am impressed," Elspeth stated. "Krenko suggested you might have a good interaction with my spells. Let's see if you can..." She glanced around. Lorwyn (or ws it Shadowmoor? She should probaby have read Jace's field guide) was unfamiliar territory to her but she quickly found a target. "That tree over there is blocking that bridge. How much damage can we do to it?" She sent a surge of white mana into Dak and pointed at the tree...
And Dak was off like a rocket, flying through the air from the enhancement spell, and slammed into the tree. The combination of speed and power caused the tree to splinter, and a followup motion of his trusty spade upturned the stump to knock it aside.
Then the bridge started to shake.
A massive creature rose up from beneath it, easily fifteen feet tall, a round monstrosity with thin but muscular legs, green skin, and a mouth big enough to take a goblin's head off.
"What is that?" Elspeth asked.
Krenko stuck two fingers in his mouth and whistled, a pair of goblins with knives running to their aid.
"That's a troll!" Dak declared.
"Then... Destroy it!" Elspeth pumped white mana into Dak on again, and Dak dove for the troll. His pitchfork plunged directly into its chest, and he sliced open its belly with his spade at super-goblin speeds. The troll toppled beneath him almost instantly... And then got back up.
Its wounds closed as quickly as they formed, and with a swing of the troll's tree-like arms, it knocked Dak aside, charging forward. One of the goblins leapt at it with his knife, pausing it momentarily before he was picked up and hurled over the treeline.
Krenko and Elspeth looked to each other and exchanged glances, moving to stand together as the troll charged again. A few motions of Krenko's hand suggested an attak pattern, and as the troll neared, Elspeth hacked off its left leg, with Krenko mirroring her strike at the right.
The troll tumbled down, a burst of blood escaping it, but no sooner had it hit the ground before a pair of fresh legs shot out of its body.
"The hell?" Krenko asked.
"Trolls can't be killed!" Dak said. "Doesn't matter what you throw at them!"
"Then how do you get rid of it?"
Elspeth raised her sword as the troll charged in again. She could hold it off, she was sure of it, and she met it with her sword. She leapt at it, and her blow sliced open its belly, but that failed to stop it from smashing into her, sending her rolling along the ground. It charged forward again, bearing over her prone form, when a loud CRACK broke the air and the troll fell on its face, a cord wrapped around one of its legs.
"Don't you know never to hit a lady?" called out the man on the other end of the cord. It was a tall man with long hair, and though he was lightly armored, a thin layer of white energy surrounded his form.
The troll tore its leg free from the cord, a replacement growing fast enough for him to charge at the man, but when they connected, the troll crashed like a wave upon rocks. Its form nearly flattened, bouncing back into shape as it fell back, and the man retorted by leaping up and sending a shining uppercut into the troll's face.
Elspeth pushed herself to her feet, and Krenko whistled again, bringing even more goblins into the fray.
"Hold it a moment!" the man declared, "And I'll deal with this beast permanently!"
"How?" Krenko called out, "I'm pretty sure it's invincible!"
"Again," Dak said, and Elspeth did. Another surge of the old standby sent Dak flying at the back of the troll. His pitchfork plunged itself into the creature's back, and his spade knocked its head clean off.
It collapsed yet again, and though this was only for a moment, it gave the stranger time to cast his spell.
"'Invincible' is just a word," he told Krenko. "OUST." A surge of white mana overwhelmed the troll, and it was gone.
