Usually, when I trip over some Ken's Rage on my playlists, Dal leaps to mind - the sort of serious/stubborn/committed sort of person that the song feels like it describes. Certainly hints of compassion, but also an iron will - the kind of person that will keep pushing through anything.
On Loss
Dalantia stirred the tea one last time, before calmly pouring himself and Melanen a cup. The two of them sipped idly, silent for a few moments. Mel finally spoke, after a few moments, "What runs in your mind, dragon?" The scarred blood elf watched their two little girls coo animatedly at each other for a few moments. "Ev'ry'ne that's gone." Mel smiled, as the girls began giggling happily. It was a wonder to him, that though they were different, they were as sisters. "How so, brother?" Dal let out a long, slow sigh. "Th'twins've my first night. The way I lost A so long ago." He sips at his tea. "All t'folk'at've dropped away. They just be.. Gone. The star twins.. Ser... War's shit." Mel sighed. "Maraasiel." Mara squeed at them at that word, and Mel mustered a sad smile. "My sons, by my own blade. Ramira, until it turned to jealousy and fury when I had truth... When I lost Mara, I became.. Blood crazed, destructive. I had only fury, waiting to be unleashed, my friend. I've no wish to become that again." "'rani think we all defined by what ain't there." Dal smiled a bit, as Zedai and Mara crawled over toward Mel. "Sol think that sure, stuff get cut away, but what's under be beautiful, so we best not despise it." The two infants began to coo in unison, tugging at the leg of Mel's pants. Mel laughed, smiling down at them as he reached to pull both up into his lap. "I know not how I would feel, would I lose these." "I would kill them." The dragon's accent disappeared, as his gaze sharpened. "Kill everyone. Anyone who participated. Everyone who profited from it. Anyone who stood aside. Anyone they loved." The dragon's hand trembled as the cup rose to his lips, his bare fury tightly controlled. "No one touches my family." Mel nodded gravely, gently bouncing the children in his lap. "Fear not, little ones! I shall protect you!" The children threw up their hands with a squee.
Mara: SEE SEE!
Zedai: MA WA!
Both: EEEEEEEEEEE!
Dal: Oh, Light.
Mel once told Buran that if things had been different, they could have been "as close as close can be". Buran will always remember that with great fondness. Had that happened, or if things ever change, could you see him devoting his life to someone who lets her faith in the Light rule hers so much? How does he feel about Light-wielders in general?
Mel: i meant what I said, and I said what I meant. I may not adhere to the Lightâs teachings, but I have respect for it, and those whose faith shines brightly - may our brothers rest well, in the sleep they have earned.
Sol and Dal: Agreed.
Mel: To a true answer, though - This I could do. I am no Vindicator, nor will I ever be, but my blades are for protection, not destruction. I could walk beside one who embraces the Light, as far as they wish - I would fear more that they reject me for my failings than anything else. I am a creature of great flaws, and some moments, I must.. Focus, to prevent the hatred and desire to destroy from drowning me.
Mara: Dwa dwa whee da da?
Mel: Ah.. Thank you, dragon. I grant, I dream of love where I will walk into fire, shield held high, beside the one I love, to protect them no matter the cost. I am quite the fool, I grant, but I am myself!
Dal: Indeed, brother.
Mel: Those whose faith carries them on through darkness shine bright for the rest of us. I doubt not the Light! Only its shine in me.
Mara: Da da.
How does Melanen feel about his daughter trying to play grabby hands at a death knight?
Mel: Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Dal: This âbout when Ki babysits?
Mel: No, no! You recall when Iâd a powerful need to head to battle, upon hearing theShadows had marched?
Sol: Yeah. Dragon took her to meet up with you when they got back, while I watched the boys at the matronâs.
Mel: Yes! Mara has taken a liking to one of the Acherai amongst the Shadows! He is a good man, though.
Sol: I remember when she lit Gilâs hair on fire. Like poof, fire, Sangoire had to put it out.
Mara: Lili buuuuuuh. Yay yay eeeee! Gi gi eeeee! Ay ay eeeee!
Mel: So! Hadeon is a good man. And her affection for him is adorable. And we all know that she enjoys attention!
Dal: Indeed!
Mel: I grant, she cleaves to the strangest folk at times, but it seems to be that she enjoys the presence of those who are not truly corrupt.
Aen and Tu: When do we get to see Uncle Cae and Aunt Ki again?
Dal: This week, actually. Weâre gonna go hang out with them for a few days.
You seem to live with quite a few people, brother. A happy home, I hope! Tell me, what is your relationship with all if these people?
Mel: Hmm.. Maraasiel is my daughter, and Roksana my mate!
Dal: Meân Sol just like to drop in.
Sol: Yes. The dragon lives on the Aldor Rise, I live in Pandaria. Weâre friends.
Mara: Aa aa? Aa aa whee dwa dwa!
Aen: Daaaaad! Mara wants to see you!
Dal: Câmere, you⌠Aenân Tu be my kids, ân Akodoâs my complicatedâs best friend. Big cat, lazy.
Sol: But-
Dal: Keep goinâ witâat sentence anâ Iâll rip out yer windpipe.
Mara: Dwa dwa⌠Hic.. Hic..
Mel: Not in front of Mara! You will do no such thing!
Dal: Sorry, Mara. Shhh.. Shh⌠I wouldnâ really hurt Sol..
Sol: OW! Tu, the hell!?
Tu: Dadâs Dad. I donâ care bout the rest.
What is the best trick Melanen's ever pulled on someone?
Dal: I gotta admit, I ainât see Mel as a trickster.
Sol: I can. Just like Mara, right Mara?
Mara: La laaaa. Lala!
Mel: Pfft⌠I am noâŚ
Sol: Youâve told me stories, Mel. Come on. The one with the gem, that was a good one.
Mel: I am no trickster!
Dal: Now I wanna hear one of these stories.
Mara: Daaa da! Daaaa da! Daaa da!
Sol: I think Mara wants to too.
Mel: You are all ganging up on me!
Dal: Thatâs âbout whatâs happeninâ. Out with it.
Mel: Bah! There was a greedy shaman, once, upon Draenor, during my wanderings. He did not act in accord with the spirits, but used various implements to force them into doing his bidding.
Dal: Thatâs some bad karma, right there.
Sol: Shh.
Mel: I stole one of his fetishes, when he was not looking, and replaced it with a regular totem. When he attempted to invoke the spirit again.. well, the earth was very angry with him! It was rather amusing to see.
Dal: And probably pretty lethal, too.
