Mecha Anime in a Nutshell:
Tetsujin 28/Gigantor: predicted the joystick controller
Mazinger Z: Teenager gets a giant robot that can curbstomp the entire world’s military from his grandfather in his will. The master mold for every super robot anime since 1973
Getter Robo: it looks like a super robot anime, it’s actually a cosmic horror story.
Great Mazinger: teenager discovers that his father faked his death so he could adopt two other teenagers and build a giant robot that can punch Hades in the face.
UFO Robo Grendizer: the aforementioned teenager teams up with an alien to defend the earth against the prince’s ex-fiancé’s family.
Mirai Robo Daltanious: a terminal idiot and his future brother-in-law fight back against an alien occupation with the guidance of Space Moses. Could have been Voltron and maybe it should have.
Beast King GoLion: high fantasy story with sci fi setting and reverse harem side story that doesn’t resolve.
Armored Fleet Dairugger IV: Star Trek as a Super Robot Anime.
Steel Jeeg: stock car driver dressed as Elvis battles an ancient civilization for control of the Earth
Voltron Defender of the Universe: two super robot anime standing on each other’s shoulders and wearing a trench coat.
Lightspeed Electroid Albegas: "I can’t Believe it’s not Getter Robo!"
Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh: who’s idea was it to let elementary school students pilot a giant robot?
Jushin Liger: made by the same guy as Mazinger Z, overshadowed by wrestler who modeled himself after it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: lots of existentialism, lots of teen angst and psychological problems.
King of the Braves: Gaogaigar: literally the opposite of Evangelion.
Bokurano: like Evangelion only depressing.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: "we only had enough budget for one Getter, so we picked Getter 2."
The Big O: Batman with giant robots and tomatoes.
Darling in the Franxx: like Evangelion only horny.
