Is your dog even real?
She's pretty ridiculous. It's a common theme of dogs in my family recently. I have a malamute who's missing most of his hair. I don't think I've shown that one to you guys, but he's the one who makes all the noise when we chat.
After thwarting the terror attack in Volgograd, the aliens seemed to pause in their activity; we had reports of minor activity scattered around the globe, but all of it was handled with ease by local authorities.
We took advantage of this lull to push forward on our research; Vahlen's team came up with several new weapon designs: research into high-precision focusing arrays led to the development of the Scatter Laser (essentially a laser shotgun) and the Laser Sniper Rifle, while reverse-engineering captured alien weaponry not only gave us the information we needed to duplicate the technology, but to develop a much larger version suitable for mounting on aircraft.
We also had our first volunteer for the genetic-enhancement program; Col. Lehana Gunda, who has rather a flair for covert operations. Apparently, word of the experimental Mimetic Skin grafts reached her ears, and so she requested that she be the first test subject. As she put it, "given the nature of most of my work, it'd be a great help."
Of course, all good things must come to an end; shortly after receiving the monthly Council report, both the aliens and EXALT reared their ugly heads: EXALT with a sabotage attempt spearheaded by a cell in South Africa, and the aliens with an abduction attempt in Cairo.
Col. Gunda was dispatched to infiltrate the EXALT cell, while Strike-One was sent to Egypt to take care of the aliens there.
An after-action report for the Egypt mission follows.
Cpt. Jacques 'Magic Man' Moreau (piloting MEC-2 'Sentinel')
The alien troops hit Cairo, descending upon a small park in the north of the city; Strike-One deployed near the south end, with Cols. Leroy and Flores taking point.
Col. Flores made initial contact, sighting two Sectoids and a Mechtoid guarding a canister of Meld; he proceeded to initiate suppressive fire on it, while Maj. Sisioni moved up the east side of the park, taking shelter behind a stopped bus.
Cpt. Moreau and Col. Song, meanwhile, moved up the center, with Cpt. Shepherd taking up position behind a wrecked car to provide cover.
Focused fire from Cols. Leroy and Song severely damaged the Mechtoid; however, an attempted ambush by a Cyberdisc and its attendant drone allowed one of the attendant Sectoids to establish a link with the Mechtoid, thus granting it a temporary shield. Fortunately, the Cyberdisc and its drone were both eliminated before they could attack; however, this diversion the Mechtoid and both Sectoids concentrated their fire on Cpt. Moreau, significantly damaging his MEC suit.
With the Cyberdisc dealt with, the squad returned its attention to the Mechtoid and its attendants; a well-placed shot from Cpt. Shepherd's rifle served to dissipate the Mechtoid's shield while Cpt. Moreau finished it off, allowing Col. Song to advance and secure the Meld canister.
Shortly after dispatching the Mechtoid, a squad of three Mutons arrived, presumably drawn by the recent firefight; two of them took cover behind a terrace on the west side of the park, while the third attempted a flanking maneuver of its own. Maj. Sisioni and Col. Flores kept the first two pinned down, allowing Col. Leroy to lob a grenade into their position, severely injuring both Mutons and killing the Sectoid that had joined them.
Meanwhile, Cpt. Shepherd dispatched the third Muton, while Cpt. Moreau dealt with the final Sectoid before he and Col. Song turned their attention to the suppressed Mutons, dispatching them both with relative ease.
One last group of aliens made its presence known shortly after this: a pair of Mutons. One of them was equipped as normal, with green armor and a plasma rifle; the other, though, was much bulkier, unarmed, and clad in red armor.
This new unarmed variant attempted to close with Col. Song; however, before it could attack, both Col. Song and Cpt. Moreau engaged their kinetic strike modules, causing severe (and, ultimately, fatal) injuries to this new entity; the rest of the squad, in turn, unloaded upon its handler.
With the area finally secure, the squad found and secured a second Meld canister before heading back to the Skyranger with the prizes of their latest mission.
Promotions:
Cpt. Moreau was promoted to Major
Casualties:
No fatalities to report; however, Cpt. Moreau's MEC suit will be out of commission for five days while it undergoes repairs.
Commander's Personal Note
This new class of Muton seems to be... engineered, as it were, for close combat.
Given its appearance (far more muscular than the average Muton) and its apparent tendency to rush towards what it perceives to be the greatest threat on the battlefield, the troops have dubbed it a "Muton Berserker".
I can only hope that we never see just what kind of damage these things can do...
(Side note: Dispatching a Muton Berserker in melee combat [i.e., by killing it with a MEC Trooper's Kinetic Strike ability] unlocks the achievement "Someone Your Own Size".)
