Wednesday, February 9: Disturbed, “Rise”

Believe was the record where Disturbed showed they were aiming for a career, shedding much of the nü metal gestures and gimmickry baked into The Sickness and honing in on a streamlined and radio-friendly approach to traditional heavy metal. And while David Draiman would continue to blather on and adopt semi-messianic postures on stage, his focus was incredibly direct, right down to all of the tracks on Believe having one-word song titles. As such, “Rise” was a clear encapsulation of the band’s approach, offering a brisk charge centered on Dan Donegan’s circular riffing, Mike Wengren’s stiff but propulsive drumming and Draiman’s elastic vocals. Yes, this was all lowest common denominator, but Disturbed were much better craftsmen than they were given credit for, as this was much more thoughtfully structured and focused than virtually all of their counterparts at the time, most of whom were trying the same thing even though they wouldn’t admit it. And “Rise” similarly felt like it was part of the metal continuum, offering a minor update of the trad metal anthems that powered the ‘80s while also standing as its own thing. Disturbed was both better and worse than this, so the track met them comfortably in the middle.
