Day 179: Gillian McNally is a big deal. Her dad is a big deal. Her uncle is a big deal. In Greeley, if your name is McNally, you're just ... kind of a big deal. Gillian has a title that's longer than a haiku: "Head of Community Engagement and Programs for Youth, and Assistant Professor of Theatre Education for the University of Northern Colorado School of Theatre and Dance." (Try fitting THAT on a business card.) And that doesn't even include her 16 years as a teaching artist with the Denver Center Theatre Academy. Translation: Gillian connects youth with the arts, focusing mostly on underserved, low-income populations. Gillian left her native Colorado for college at Webster University in St. Louis and then the University of Texas at Austin. Since then, Gillian's do-gooder resume is chock full of ... doing good. That includes her work with TRIO, a national program that helps low-income and first-generation students gain access to college. Her teaching credits include the University of Texas, Temple, West Chester and Arcadia. At UNC, Gillian teaches courses for both undergraduate and graduate students in theatre education. She was the supervising director for a touring production of "Tomato Plant Girl" at UNC that included among her cast members a future member of The Lumineers. In 2011, Gillian was named the Alliance for Colorado Theatre’s 2011 Higher Education Theatre Educator of the Year. Not to be outdone, her father, Tom, a longtime teacher and actor at UNC himself, went out and won the lifetime achievement award from the Colorado Theatre Guild's Henry Awards. (Take that, kid!). Tom and his actor brother Dan, still appear regularly for Colorado's oldest theatre company, the Little Theatre of the Rockies in Greeley. Because she apparently does not have enough to do, Gillian also will be the chair for the 2014 American Alliance for Theatre Education national conference. Did I mention that the McNallys are a big deal?
