K-Shop was made in Bournemouth, England, just a few miles from me by a director I had been put in to contact with a few weeks back on my ongoing quest to make/work on independent films.

I was excited to see the work of a first time filmmaker from my area - especially as I might well be working for with him one of these days - but when I looked into the film it became very exciting regardless of that. I was taken aback by the production quality of the snappy trailer as well as the smartness of the concept. “Sweeney Todd in a kebab shop” could so easily, in the independent realm, be a silly, exploitation affair. What impressed me about the trailer, and Dan’s comments on the film, was that whilst it was aware of its ‘extreme’ appeal it was decidedly a thriller (a genre I  find too often to have no flavour) and one with something to say, at that.

In that sense it’s almost a call back to socially conscious horror films of yore but it certainly seems now that this particular balance of drama, shock, metaphor and commentary was the smart move for a debut filmmaker who wants to show an exciting, unique voice, a marketable, eye-popping concept and not be pigeon-holed in genre film-making. I am very jealous of the ingenuity there.

The film plays as a smart, very good looking movie with a fantastic lead in Ziad Abaza whose authenticity in covering such extreme subject matter will give you food for thought. Whilst I enjoyed seeing Bournemouth on screen at no point did this look or feel like standard low-budget fair. I can’t wait to see what Dan does next.
