Economic Warfare So I was thinking back on the costs of things in canon and the exchange rate between the Galleon and the Pound and it didn’t make sense to me. So I had a thought. The statute of secrecy came into being in 1692 (I think) and the British wizarding world for the most part is stuck in the 1700’s so what if, their currency exchange was also stuck in the 1700’s? I did a bit of checking and from what I could find the value of a pence in 1750 is worth the equivalent of £1.80 in 2011. So if we reduce that a little to around £1.50 then it’s still a 1500% markup, if my math is right. Kind of makes the 7g for a wand and 1000g for winning a year long deadly competition a bit more worth it. Now I know inflation is more complicated than this but lets just go with it hmm? So the prompt is: In fifth year Hermione after being insulted once too many times by the wizarding world goes off on a rant and our favorite ferret belittles her with how wealthy his family is and all the usual guff. Harry is surprised when his girlfriend simply breaks down in laughter at this and replies with “Please ferret. I can buy and sell your pitiful little inbred family with my account interest alone,” and then walks away from the spluttering ferret. Harry chases after Hermione and quizzes her in private about what she just said, where she explains, after a bit of coaching about how Muggleborns when they first enter Gringotts are let in on a secret that the goblins have been exploiting for years about the exchange rate that was set by wizards back in 1750 to exploit the muggleborn students and they’ve never changed it in their infinite laziness. This allows the modern newcomers to basically laugh at the higher prices that the purebloods think they are using to exploit the muggleborns. Supposedly helping them to drive the Muggleborn out of the wizarding world post graduation when it’s actually the muggleborn simply not taking jobs because it’s not worth it, and many just live off part time jobs or bank accounts. After all. How would a muggle milkman on minimum wage be able to put two sons through the premier school in the wizarding world?? Hermione then goes on to wage economic warfare on the wizarding world the defend a, quite happily going along with the idea, Harry. Just using the college funds her parents set up for her as a baby. Up to you what she does along the way, but she must buy Malfoy Manor and kick the family to the curb. Most of the Potter family money has come from this (there’s quite a few Muggleborn in the Potter family tree after all) and she must buy the Prophet. Use your best judgement in how this scheme is kept from the general public by the goblins.
