Ford haters don't understand what it's like to grow up with an abusive parent who pits you against your siblings. Every day being a secretly understood contest of who was going to be treated well and who was going to be scapegoated. Eventually those roles become more solidified and that's why it's so hard for Ford to 1) believe Stan wouldn't sabotage him 2) stand up for him when he's being kicked out.

And I know we all want that catharsis of them making up with real apologies and Ford just for once in adulthood telling Stan he appreciates him (the praise after the memory gun sacrifice doesn't count because he's saying that stuff to the kids). But as someone with a 'golden child' brother who I love dearly and who I know loves me, the 'scapegoat' that's pretty rare. The depiction of just both silently agreeing everything is okay and all is forgiven is very accurate and very human from both sides. (Plus I think that amount of sincerity would make Stan raise his hackles, just a bit.)

during those transient years if he had to open up and explain his situation do you think he said something along the lines of he had to leave because his old man had a short fuse and he couldn't bear to be under his thumb any longer ? do you think sometimes he made himself believe that? he was the one who left. he wasn't unwanted. he didn't want them.
