Reviews 096: Idjut Boys & Laj
Dan and Conrad Idjut have been lurking behind the scenes at Claremont 56 since the beginning of the label, dropping killer reworks here and there as well as their immense and hallucinatory DJ edits and remixes on the 5 Year and 10 Year anniversary sets. And with this summer’s release of the single-sided Slateo 12”, the Idjut Boys have finally contributed purely original material to Mudd’s imprint, though it’s a bit of a blast from the past as “Slateo” was first released on Session Recordings’ Solid Session Vol.2 compilation back in 2002. As for the music, the track sees the Idjuts joining together with Laj (aka Raj Gupta aka Ray Mang, another longtime Claremont 56/Leng associate) and Pete Z. for some fusion and dub kissed balearic perfection…easily as relevant today as it was 16 years ago.
Idjut Boys & Laj - Slateo (Claremont 56, 2018) Right away, we are thrust into a haze of deep space transmissions and galactic winds blowing over a smooth downtempo riddim and breezy hand drums. As cushiony sub bass tones pull in and out behind the kick drum, possibly the most irresistible dubwise bassline ever emerges with its snaking sliding magic and helps the song settle into a gentle tropical glide. Initially the melodic focus is on these delicate house pads that float across the mix like clouds, but in truth, everything serves as a foundation for the synthesizer fireworks to come. For then enters Pete Z., taking off on interstellar jazz fusion journeys...all jaw dropping exploratory shredding at the center of the universe. The tone is so cosmic and lysergic, smothered as it is in layers of reverb and delay, and underneath the intense soloing, the rhythms change subtly, with small variations to the shaker, tambourine, and hi-hat accents. Occasionally the filter opens up on those hypnotic house pads, resulting in rushing blasts of sound within the spacey solo perfection. And as we near the end, the bassline and drifting chords drop in and out over an extended drum dub coda.

Nothing to Prove – Full Part: Bjorn Leines
Bjorn Leines has been filming video parts for years and continues to be a leader in the snowboard industry. His full part from Nothing to Prove is a testament to the determination it takes when you get faced with a horrific mid-season injury. Bjorn’s snaps both arms in 1 crash but bounces back with the skills and power of a ninja. This part features cameos for Chris Grenier, Randy “Killer”…
