the weight distribution thing is basically playing around with your center of gravity. ultimately all dancers are human too, and there’s a limit to how fast we can move. if something seems inhumanly fast, there’s probably a secret behind it - which is the weight distribution!

i’ve watched some videos like ‘top X hardest kpop dances’ and a lot of the time, the ‘hard ones’ are with faster footwork. this was one that i saw included, but this is actually footwork that’s pretty common in the dance industry. basically you can see dino keep his center of gravity in one place, and his feet move around that quick enough that he doesn’t fall (see how his core (hips to chest) stay in the same place!). he doesn’t put 100% of his weight on one foot at a time, because that would be impossible and way too slow for anything to work. i’d say it would work if you imagine approximately 30% of weight for each step and keep the rest with your centre of gravity.

this is right before the ‘window washing’ move in violeta. if you look at the legs, the right leg moves fairly quickly left and right, right? but the weight distribution for this is completely on the left leg the whole time. you could do this part with your foot not even touching the ground, and the rest of your body would look the same. the toes are kind of just sliding on the floor with no weight on them. 

basically, if your foot wants to move somewhere fast, it can’t have weight on it. a lot of beginners that i used to teach looked like they were tripping on their feet for some moves, and that’s when i knew that i needed to take a step back and slowly go through the moves to explain where their weight should be. after that, they get kind of amazed at themselves and it’s pretty cute haha. everyone can dance!

you should also be aware of where on your foot your weight is. sometimes it needs to be at your toes, sometimes your heels, sometimes balls of your feet. if you keep on the balls of your feet as a neutral position (kind of like triple threat in basketball), then you can get to whatever position faster (i’m still working on this… you never stop learning as a dancer haha). so ‘neutral’ stance for dancing is usually knees slightly bent, weight mostly on the balls of your feet. but this stuff will come naturally after figuring out the above. fast footwork at the beginning is usually just figuring out the most efficient way to move fast. stay calm and think! you can do it c:

legs are very important in dance. the more aware you are about weight distribution, center of gravity, and how to use the muscles in your leg while you dance, you’ll not only become a better dancer, but also have a lower probability of getting injured!

disclaimer: i dont actually know how helpful these tips will be :/ i definitely have an easier time learning from videos than people normally do, even among my dancer friends… but ill try to focus on common mistakes i see beginners doing!

0. use the chrome extension called “flip this”

this literally saves my soul lol. after you download it, right click it, go to options, and choose ‘flip X’ and ‘0 degrees’. basically it will mirror any video for you and you dont have to watch those low quality 10 fps mirrored videos

1. dont slow the video down too much

it makes sense to slow it down if you really can’t see what they are doing and it is okay for when you are picking up details. but put it at 100% speed as soon as you can. hip hop has a base groove/rhythm to follow which is how advanced dancers pick up choreo a lot faster. you’ll look a lot less awkward when you can see the full picture vs chopping up the phrases. (i actually always learn them at 100% speed and learn faster that way than when i slow it down lol… even for fast stuff like txt crown or svt hit lol)

2. understand the musicality

are the moves following the lyrics? the bass? hihats? or just a simple 12345678 count? when i learn a part of a dance, esp if it’s hard, i sit down and watch it for like 5 minutes first to listen and figure out what they are hitting. after my brain finishes dancing it’s easier for my body to learn c:

3. how much weight are you putting on each foot

whenever i teach beginners, the main mistake they make is not knowing how to distribute their weight between their legs, and that is why it is so hard for them. if you end up thinking like ‘man this is so fast i cant get it im tripping over myself it’s so awkward’ this is probably why. at first it will be hard to figure out, but play around it (or you can send me an ask for help and i can explain!). a lot of fast footwork only works if u adjust your center of gravity properly. if u can figure out what percentage on ur weight is on ur right vs left foot, u are through half the battle! 

4. i dont care if it’s boring… go slow

super clean dancers look super clean because they know exactly what every part of their body is doing at every time in the dance (even ‘between moves’). you need to go slow enough for you to figure this out before you can go fast. 

5. don’t follow the best dancer, follow the cleanest dancer

if you want to learn the moves, don’t follow chaeyeon, or kai, or taeyong, or whoever else unless they are also the cleanest dancer (e.g. dino). they add a lot of personality stuff that will confuse the heck out of you LOL. e.g. if i were to learn an izone dance i would follow chaewon lol

6. film yourself, watch it as many times as ur faves, and keep track of ur progress

do it. it’s embarrassing. i hate it too. but you will improve a lot faster lol

Hi, I do Irish and Scottish dancing and I need help/advice for anyone willing to give who has a minute. I really struggle staying on the balls of my feet when dancing. I can stand tall on both feet on the balls only and walk around but as soon as I start dancing the heel drops back down and become very flat-footed. If anyone has an exercises that can help improve dancing on the balls of the feet I really need help because this is what pulls me down in every exam and competition and my teachers have been saying it for ages but I haven't been improving. Thanks for the help! :)
