Teaching Philosophy and Curriculum Approaches to Dance on Screen

I draw on a wealth of professional experience in arts, broadcast, performance and corporate contexts as well as understanding academic demands. Latterly the teaching has drawn on my deep involvement in creating and presenting dance on screen internationally and as this is a relatively new subject area for teaching I’ve been involved in developing new hybrid strategies to bridge the languages of film and dance worlds. I have often taught mixed classes of dancers and non-dancers who have diverse technical experience in and moving image and digital technologies. I’ve found that mixing a variety of movement-based exercises, watching films, discursive approaches and game-like tasks into the teaching keeps it alive and fresh for all types of learners. I’ve asked a lot of questions over the years particularly of dance artists and choreographers and learned as I’ve taught.

I’ve developed an understanding of what works effectively in stimulating and inspiring students with diverse skillsets; and what engages and motivates students to achieve clearly set goals. I give students practical skills that may help them move into professional level contexts understanding technical tools and production processes. I also try to make sure they understand the art of what they are doing and help them find their own voice through contextualising work in the history of screendance internationally.

Being a teacher, a commercial video producer, and a practicing evolving artist with an international reputation makes me a unique voice in the “Screendance” world. Driven by a desire for world-class excellence in my students I share my extensive experiences in corporate, broadcast and arts sectors generously and with a passion. The emphasis is as much on practice as product, exploring how imagination and inventiveness along with camera and editing techniques can capture the characteristics of dance performance and choreography – spontaneity, energy, presence and connection to worldwide audiences.

Using her favourite choreographers and directors the results are five short films: 'Solo' choreographed and performed by William Forsythe; 'Blue Yellow' choreographed by Jonathan Burrows; 'Smoke' choreographed and directed by Mats Ek; 'Movement' performed by David Kern and Benedicte Loyen; and 'In the Wind, There is Someone' performed by David Kern and Brian Reeder.
