Do you happen to have any tips on writing dancing scenes?
A dance scene is an action scene so one of the most importantthings is to not get bogged down by writing out every single movement as itoccurs. You do not need to tell thereader each and every thing. Instead, trust them to logically fill in the blanks between the important actions. And for the movements you do include, makesure to make them count.
An action sequence should both move the plot forward andreveal more about the characters and their relationships in some way. Use precise sensory imagery (touch, hearing, smell, sight, taste) to help reveal what the characters are thinking and feeling. If it is a partner dance, make use ofsilences and the things characters say or don’t say to further reveal theirthoughts and emotions.
Also think about the setting/environment and how it affectsthe characters.
Find dance scenes in your favorite books and examine how theyare structured and what the author does to covey movement. (Anything Jane Austen will have multipledance scenes, if you need a start.) Watch movies as well as actual performancesand see what draws you into the performance and what details you notice. You might also look up reviews or articles ondance performances or ballets to see how they are described by professionals inthe field.
This was kind of general advice but I hope it helps! If you need me to clarify or expand on anythingI said, just ask! \^o^/
