annabeth. she gets to much hate for someone so kick ass
Alrightio. I find it absolutely appalling how much hate this girl gets. Let’s go with some finer points I’ve seen.
“She was probably exaggerating her father and stepmother’s abuse, what a whiner. Mr. Chase is so nice!”
No. Small children do not assume that their parents are bad people unless they are given a reason to do so. Plus, in Mark of Athena, HER STEPMOTHER ACTUALLY DISMISSED HER LEGITIMATE FEARS and told her basically to shut up because she was waking the boys. Not okay. The girl was traumatized.
Also, she clearly has PTSD and abandoment issues up the wazoo. Her brash treatment of Percy at the start of their friendship is predominantly due to her massive fear that, if she got too close to him, she wouldn’t be able to handle it when he died. BECAUSE SHE WAS CONVINCED HE WOULD DIE. She’s exhibiting clear “I’m pushing you away to save myself” characteristics that children with difficult home lives often show.
Alrightio now for why I love her: a list by Sara -
Knife skills are not easy and she kicks ass with it
She is a fighter, a thinker, and brave beyond measure
She has taken a knife, the world on her shoulders, and a quest on her own which she may not have survived to save her friends and the world. Three times she has risked her life with no thought of her own safety
SHE’S KICKASS ON SO MANY LEVELS OKAY
She’s incredibly dynamic and has a lot of incredibly interesting layers - from first glance she’s simply the brainy kid, but she becomes so, so much more.
Her voice and personality is so fun. “You had to break.” She reprimands her ankle for breaking. Like. Come on.
Again, she breaks her ankle and basically just goes “alright how do we get this minor problem taken care of.”
“You’re dead. Sit down,” she says to misogynistic asshat ghosts whom she completely outwits fairly quickly.
She faces her biggest fear since she was a baby - and defeats it.
She and Percy compliment each other. As I’ve said before, she helps him back to earth when he gets wrapped up in his “I AM TO BLAME FOR ALL THE WRONG IN THE WORLD” issues, and he hits her with the happy stick whenever she becomes Captain Ivannawork and gets too ingrained in the seriousness of life.
She’s gotten past more, both emotionally and physically, by 17 than most people would do in eight lifetimes.
SHE ATTACKED KRONOS-AS-LUKE. WITH A KNIFE. AND SEVERE WOUNDS. COME ON.
I could go on for literally hours but I’m getting dangerously close to my super Annabeth essay I’ve been threatening to write for two years now, so I’m going to end :P
