so i saw this ask from @yurioniceconfessions and i am fuming like
…………….. y’all
did they even do their research???????
how is dancesports. similar to figure skating.
literally nothing is the same. in dancesports you compete in standard or latin style ballroom or both. you can join the ten dances or you can exclusively have standard or latin training only and end up joining the respective competitions.
figure skating, as i have gathered from yoi and some research, lets you do only ONE discipline in men’s, women’s, pair, and ice dancing, and you devote your whole life to it.
dancesports has you compete in heats (i.e. many pairs dancing together on the same dancefloor so the leads have to be aware of where they’re going), as opposed to figure skating, where each competitor/pair has an allotted time to perform. dancesports is literally a horde of dancers aiming to catch the attention of the judges and the audience, like a “which is the most beautiful rose in this bush” type of thing.
for dancesports, international standard and latin have 5 dances each. waltz, tango, viennese waltz, foxtrot, and quickstep for standard; samba, cha cha cha, rumba, paso doble, and jive for latin. they don’t get to choose the music in the competition itself--a random song that fits the dance comes on and they perform their routine to that. no lifts are allowed.
for the pair skating and ice dances, y’all get to choose your song that’s in that year’s allowed list, if i understood correctly. you get to choreograph your routine, get all the nuances perfect because it’s your song and you can choreograph it however you want. there are lift restrictions for either discipline, but there ARE lifts.
now let’s talk about tatara and yuuri. they are not alike. in any sense of the word.
yuuri is already a legit figure skater! a 24-year-old dime-a-dozen figure skater! certified by the JSF! he’s competed in local and international competitions and even the GPFs! which means he has EXPERIENCE.
tatara on the other hand, does not have those. he’s just a beginner dancer. the manga’s just into the arc of his first classification competition, which means he hasn’t been certified yet. yuuri’s competed in a number of comps in his 24 years of life, but tatara has only participated in two. T W O.
yuuri’s liked figure skating since he was like 4 or 5 years old. tatara only discovered the wonder of dancesports in his last year of middle school, when he was around 15. they don’t have the same amount of experience and they compete in very different sports.
TL;DR: i’m not saying dancesports is better than figure skating. i’m not saying tatara is better than yuuri. i’m just saying that one should not be compared to the other because they are nothing alike.
read the manga and do your research before spewing ignorant statements, please.
